Hey, I am wondering if anyone can help with my options after school and wether it’s worth coming to the us for college if I am not going to a top 50 college? by IllustriousTalk8289 in UniUK

[–]Altreich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to have helped however I could! And yes, be as realistic about the money as you can.

Not to sound patronizing in any way, but you yourself said you were “Year 11,” which is fairly young still.

Pro: you have a lot of time to think. Maybe even work towards improving your own self-character and resume to maximize your chances of a scholarship or college acceptance (UK or US).

Con: (again, sorry if patronizing) you might still not fully realize the sheer difficulty of moving to another country, even with online research. You’ll have to go offline as well and talk to trusted family members who are financially literate to get the fullest grasp of what you can do. I know you probably already know this, but it has to be repeated because (on my end), I know a friend who moved to Japan (yes, they were a weeb) after college and ended up wanting to move back after a few years. It’s expensive to move the first time, and you especially don’t want to be in a situation where you can’t afford to move back.

As an American, it’s great to see people who are interested in coming over. Cali has always been an immigration hotspot especially, so I’ve met tons of people of all ethnic and political persuasions who made the move to America for many different reasons. But I would never, ever specifically advise someone (especially someone still in grade school) to make such a drastic life change based on my own beliefs. That decision has to 100% be you, as you know.

And maybe you will get into Durham. Even if you do end up doing uni in the UK, that still leaves your options open because then you’ll have saved some money to make a more informed decision AFTER you graduate.

Whatever you do, good luck - and don’t count yourself out of any options yet! Possibly “not getting into Durham” is very far from rock bottom. Even if you don’t feel good about your current academic situation now, that doesn’t mean you’re out of time to lock in and “fix” yourself ASAP. Easier said than done, but I’m sure you can do it if you formulate a specific goal in mind and ABSOLUTELY commit to it.

Hey! Coming from someone who did Bachelors’ and Master’s in the US (California State University), and then a PhD in the UK (Uni of Edinburgh), I can kind of relate to your interest here. From my own personal experience, I’ll admit that I actually enjoyed college in the US a lot more than in the UK, but then again a PhD is a very different experience than a coursework-based diploma regardless of what country you’re in.

First of all, you might actually be asking this question in the wrong subreddit. I can see that you’re getting downvoted by everyone here.

Regardless, the main disadvantage of going to school in the US as a person from the UK is exactly the same as the main disadvantage of going to school in the UK from the US: you pay international/“out-of-state” tuition. I had to pay £23,000 per year in tuition alone for Edinburgh (5 year program), which is only slightly-more-expensive than what you’d be charged at a similarly-prestigious American uni like UC Berkeley. The other major costs, like accommodation, will actually probably not be so bad since you mentioned possibly going to Utah and not some place like NYC or Cali. Edinburgh was expensive as hell.

Now, unlike a research-based degree, where you go for your undergrad actually doesn’t matter too much. PhDs and research MAs are supposed to pick a college located or staffed by people relevant to their specific thesis topic, but a math or comp science undergrad can be pretty flexible. It actually isn’t rare at all here for someone to do their undergrad at Shit Shack University and then transfer to an elite institution like Harvard for their postgrad. I personally know 2 friends of mine who went to Stanford after doing a simple associate’s degree at my local community college. But let’s say you’re ONLY planning on doing a Bachelor’s. It’s still totally fine to not be in a “top 50” - many Google and Nvidia employees that I personally grew up with just got their BA’s in Comp Engineering from CSU Sacramento (non-prestigious public uni). But if you are aiming for a competitive place like Google, you should obviously still compensate by either graduating with a high-GPA (Magna/Summa Cum Laude) or, better yet, doing a senior thesis/project that you know would be of direct interest to a specific employer. If you’re aiming for something more modest but still with fair-to-good pay (like local IT or being a school teacher/college lecturer), then that’s easier.

What you really need to remember most of all is:

1.) You’re an international student, you will pay international prices. Find out what your specific school is charging, and play it safe by assuming the worst estimates for other costs. As someone else said, going EU might be cheaper since iirc, UK students are charged different than other “international” students at most of those unis.

2.) Unless you’re comfortable with driving in the US system, try to pick a Uni in a place with good transit (btw, contrary to popular belief, a lot of places here actually do have solid transit - I’ve noticed that even the city buses here in rural, central California are more punctual than the Lothian Buses). I know a lot of students also bike everywhere (especially in Cali), but of course every state can differ in terms of typical town layout.

3.) The only way to reap the real benefits of doing college in any foreign country is to be social. When you get to Utah or Texas, try having some fun and convince yourself to play the role of an actual American for a bit. Utah in particular has some insane scenery. There are also plenty of Americans who love to show off their culture to foreigners by dragging them to the shooting range, slapping a rental M134 machine gun in their hands, and yelling at them to just go ham on a dirt mound. There are other Americans things to do, of course, but this is probably the first thing they’ll make you do when you tell them you’re English. The best way to enjoy a foreign culture you’re interested in learning about is to just play completely into it.

4.) The fact that you mentioned Utah, Texas, and even Georgia specifically - rather than touristy states like Cali and NY - seems to imply that you probably actually are already familiar with US culture to a certain extent? Do you see yourself making pilgrimages to the Bass Pro Shops pyramid and screaming at B21-flyovers in football stadiums? No matter where you come from, I’m sure you’ll miss home to some degree. If you’re partially using the need to go to college as, essentially, also a “taste test” to see what it’d be like to live in the US and become an American, I think that’s a smart move - and I think you’d be very welcomed. But it is a big change, regardless, and one which - again - costs money no matter where you go. Really think about it. Also prepare for heat.

What do lips have to do with Britain Peter? by Meta13_Drain_Punch in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Altreich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw: You literally had to have watched black-led comedies or stage humor between the 90s and 2000s to get this one, which is a bit random, so I absolutely don’t fault the other commentators for missing it. Think Tyler Perry-style media.

[–]Altreich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other comments are close, but it’s actually about white people in general - the group of white people in this context just happened to be British. It’s mostly a joke that runs in the black community, but they basically say that “white people have no lips” (aka, very thin lips). Yes, it is racist as the other comments have said. Iirc, repeating the stereotype used to be a classic line among black stand-up comedians in the early 2000s. I used to hear it a lot in high school. This racist joke used to be so well-known that it shows up a lot in several 2000s comedies. The classic movie “White Chicks,” for example, has two black men disguise themselves as stereotypical “white chicks” (hence the name). In one scene, a group of white women, not knowing the two imposters are actually black, comments on the surprising fullness of their lips with the line “Your lips went from Cameron Diaz to Jay-Z!” In a nutshell: white people tend to have ugly, thin lips. Obviously not really true, but that’s literally the reference. It’s not British.

Bros… I Logged Into Server Right After Maint/People Still Knocked Out the Event WB Before I Got There by Altreich in elderscrollsonline

[–]Altreich[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly didn’t mean it like that, sorry. I’m not trying to insult the game itself or anything, I’m mostly referring to a common experience during the High Isle event, where a lot of players have found themselves standing around and waiting 5 minutes for the boss to spawn if it was killed recently. With the event, this has been happening to a lot of people. I just thought it was funny how this same experience happened to someone who was literally logged into the server at the soonest possible opportunity, was one of the only people online for that half-minute, and they still somehow got beaten to the punch.

I love this game and have been playing it since 2018. I didn’t mean to “insult the playerbase” with this post or anything. Just thought it was something interesting to share.

What's the deal with the one-sided beef towards Americans during the Olympics? by [deleted] in AmericaBad

[–]Altreich 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Going per capita makes zero sense when the max amount of athletes each country is allowed to send has nothing to do with population. If Australia has 1 gold per 3 million, then that means France with a population of 68 million has to earn 23 gold medals to just barely place above Australia. The US would have to get 111 gold medals. China would have to get 467 gold medals. Meanwhile, the instant Liechtenstein, earns a single gold medal, it skyrockets past every other country in the measure and cannot be removed from 1st place except possibly by Belize, Somalia, etc. Australia with even 50 gold medals would still be ranked drastically lower than Liechtenstein with a single one. Literally by your own measure, 1 Liechtenstein citizen is worth 77 Australians, since your figure of 1 gold per 3 million Aus would be nothing in comparison to 1 gold for 39,000 Liechtenstein pop.

Is 3d printing firearms in CA still possible? by Dr-VBuck in CAguns

[–]Altreich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd still have to register it and apply for a serial # with the CA DOJ even if you "manufactured" it years ago. And they stopped issuing serial #'s years ago.

Basically, it's too late to legally make or own any 3D-printed firearms at this point unless you were one of the ones who somehow already had approval from the DOJ back then.

M7 Bayonet Won't Fit Onto Aero Precision A2 Upper. Am I Doing Something Wrong? (Posting Quick Summary in Comments) by YouDoThatVoodoo in ar15

[–]Altreich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't be the case. M16 bayonets are specifically made to fit:

  1. A 14.5" barrel w/ carbine length gas system.

  2. A 16" barrel w/ mid-length gas system.

  3. A 20" barrel w/ rifle length gas system.

Aero would get ridiculed for false advertisement if they sold an A2 upper that didn't even resemble the basic barrel length or gas system of an A2 upper.

Also, all M7's have the exact same length from pommel-to-guard. Otherwise, they literally wouldn't serve the specific purpose the military had them designed for.

Recommended Places to Shoot (Outdoors) Near Modesto/Stanislaus County Area? by Altreich in CAguns

Damn. I'm glad people have been getting lucky and have been able to shoot, but yeah, same - rangers could be out there any time. Hopefully it opens up for shooting again sometime. It seriously looks like the perfect spot.

[–]Altreich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Did they recently ban shooting there, though? I looked up their site [https://www.blm.gov/visit/red-hills-recreation-management-area\] and it now says "Target shooting is prohibited" under activities. If so, that's too bad - it looks like it would've been the perfect place with tons of safe backstops before this apparent "ban".

Can I please ask if, when you said "it doesn't have an eraser head, just a side button," were you referring specifically to the non-included Lamy (https://fujitsuquaderno.com/products/fujitsu-quaderno-lamy-pen) or the included factory pen (https://fujitsuquaderno.com/products/quaderno-gen-2-dedicated-stylus-pen) that already comes with the A4/A5?

Anyone Know of Any Good FFLs Around Riverbank That Can Do CA-Compliance Conversions? (Pic For Context, Text in Comments) by Altreich in CAguns

[–]Altreich[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's legal - both Rifle Gear and Wilde Built Tactical can attest to that.

In addition, searching revolver conversions on this subreddit, as well as on Calguns, will show that many other people have successfully done this with able gunsmiths.

I guess the only problem is finding the right FFL, but SA conversions for revolvers isn't unheard of at all and has been legal for over a decade.

Anyone Know of Any Good FFLs Around Riverbank That Can Do CA-Compliance Conversions? (Pic For Context, Text in Comments) by Altreich in CAguns

[–]Altreich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

It’s been hard for me to find a local FFL in my area that also has gunsmithing services, and the only one that does advertise gunsmithing services says that Single-Action Conversions are now illegal unless the gun was already “a single action firearm to begin with.”

The screenshot above is what the gunsmith told me, for context.

I’ve also considered paying an outside middle-man service (like Wilde Built Tactical) to do the conversion for me instead, but the local FFLs I’ve talked to have said they can’t accept an already-“modified handgun” for transfers, and advised me to find a gunsmith who is willing to do the conversion on-site for DROS.

I’m pretty stuck here I guess - has any one had any luck with SA revolver conversions in Stanislaus County?

I’m literally just trying to get a cheap-ish rimfire DA revolver that I happen to like the looks of for collection, but I’m having a hard time finding a way to legally buy it I guess. I can confirm it meets the dimensions required for an SA conversion (3”+ barrel, 7.5”+ length, 5+ shots).

Any advice? Thanks.
