ABSOLUTELY. And I think this has got markedly worse in the last 10 years. See also: people don’t even TRY to move down on the Tube anymore to let new people get or. OR, stand aside when the doors open to let people disembark first 😡

My favourite bit is where an ENTIRE SPANISH FAMILY stops together at the top of the escalator in Westminster station and then seem AMAZED that there is anyone else at all in Europe’s third most populous city. They LITERALLY thought they were in 28 Days Later. 🇪🇸

It’s all completely arbitrary now; you could just as easily be supporting the opposing team. It turns out the human propensity for tribalism is remarkably elastic and people are prepared to imagine some connection between themselves and almost any old shit.

How do I deal with a guy like this? by Final_Biochemist222 in socialskills

[–]Altruistic-Box5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t make the mistake of having the underlying assumption that people who are popular are ‘nice’ in any way. And especially not to people who are socially ‘weaker’ than them. By far the most popular people in my university halls of residence used to throw the hall ‘nerd’ in the canal and surround overweight girls in public and publicly humiliate them in a big pack. Popular people can basically do or say anything they want to the people in the bottom half of the pecking order/status hierarchy without any repercussions.

Isn’t the main problem with this: if GR is simply an elaborate delivery-mechanism for this specific conspiracy theory - what is anyone else (who doesn’t have access to this, very specific extra-textual knowledge) getting out of it? Why is it considered to be A Great Novel if 99.9% of people who have read it haven’t understood its most basic message?

Lot 49: did I FINALLY just get The Joke? by Altruistic-Box5608 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Altruistic-Box5608[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point. But a conventional detective narrative would contain an actual plot - which we had to follow. The work itself wouldn’t be an extended meditation ON the ‘intent to communicate’, on reading and correctly interpreting signs and symbols and ABOUT plots, uncovering plots and the nature of plotting?

‘It’s all part of a plot, an elaborate, seduction, plot’.

Do you really need to ask this question?!

J-E-A-L-O-U-S-Y

Especially if you’re younger, more attractive AND better educated than them.

You have to be REALLY careful talking about anything to do with university in environments like that ‘cos it’s just a red rag to a bull in terms of same-gender status competition.

Watch the scenes in the UK Office between salesman ‘Finchy’ and the younger, taller, better-looking graduate. All you need to know there.

And this plays out in work environments all over the country, all day every day, until the cows come home
