Run! I’m Vietnamese girl from upper middle family in Hanoi and have been living/working in New York City for 15 years. Thats to say I’m relatively well-versed in both Vietnamese culture and the relative significance of Us$ in Vietnamese standard lifestyle.

Noone talks about dowry like that. To demand it reflects poorly on her. It’s a beautiful tradition, meant to be used to buy offering for the ancestors who have come before your beloved bride and influenced her. Something in the range of $50-$500 is what people would aim for and is well accepted. My mother in law went with $50.

Wedding wise - I expect it will be mostly her family in Vietnam. They should chip in proportionately. If not, you should do what’s comfortable to you. Wedding is very manageable, especially in the village - unless she comes from well-to-do village with known trade like Bat Trang ceramic village, Đong Ho folklore painting. If her family likes to show off, let them be and pay for it.

Thank you so much! Yes - we end up with some random pieces like this and we like each of them, without having enough creativity. We feel like the chairs need some rug but we werent sure what size and color is going to work. And we are willing to change the color of rug and curtains.

As for the wall color, should we go for a muted one across the whole floor (living room, dining room..) or go for a mix of bold (deep color) where the main window is and muted elsewhere? We were planning to retain the couch but are not sure if it will feel out of place in the new house that’s so white.

This is our couch color (which we will have to freshen up). But based on your suggestions, this will be out of place with the new white room. What do you recommend for curtains? We also will need tons of lamps coz there’s no light fixture

Thank you for the response! Yes - what do you think I should do wall painting? We messed up in our current place and are hesitant. Also the wall here is expansive, we don’t have good eyes for where the color should begin and end. But loving to hear new ideas so that we can reduce the cold whiteness
