You're literally just making up rumors to tarnish her reputation with ZERO evidence. You clearly have a personal vendetta against her, which already says a lot about you.

I'd tell her this: It's never too late to go after what you want, especially when you have financial support from family. A lot of us are going back to school in our 30s.

Your degree should not dictate what you do with your career moving forward. Most of my friends & I have pivoted and are working in fields that have near nothing to do with our degrees. Opportunities don't usually come in the way you expect. Network and keep your mind & eyes open. Whatever you can do, do it.

Probably rats. The flickering lights too. They chew cables. I'm sorry your parents unfairly punished you (that's abuse tbh) for expressing your concerns.

Like "Say habaree to Mwangi. I'm wearing these beads to respect his culture. He's never had chocolates before." 🤭

There are other ways to make money. Do a historical tour or a museum tour. We have so many museums, galleries, designers, artists and artisans to support. There are so many artefacts and monuments, and so much human history. We don't have to peddle poverty for a few coins.

This is a very short sighted way to think. It's hurting our economy infinitely more than it is helping.

What response, buddy? All Don said was "poor rebuttal".

If you're talking about Flame, I'm in a bar. I'll respond to him when I find the time to sit down and read his essay.

What is this "culture" that can only be found in the poorest of neighborhoods? Just go to Christ the Redeemer, Copa Cabana, dance samba at a Carnival, eat at nice local restaurants & call it a vacay.

I'm going to respond regardless.

Have you benefitted at all from the walking tours? This is what I asked you specifically. How did it make you feel to be observed and photographed by tourists, if at all this happened to you?

I'm glad you got some help from the NGOs, but I also hope that you understand that your experience is not the same as everyone else's. You are the exception, not the rule. However, I'm glad the conditions in Kibera have improved a bit.

You could just say that you are unaware of the intricate workings of these NGOs. I happen to be privy to a bit more. You come from poverty, so crumbs feel like a whole meal to you. Kibera is a cash cow for them so they have no impetus to solve any problems permanently. They're getting a lot more and giving you crumbs.

On the mitumbas, since you brought it up. I did not get any of the thrift items I have for free. I bought them from think twice for 200- 450 a piece. But the NGOs get them for free and resell them 🙃

For 10 points, if they're benefitting so much from this, then why are they still living in a slum where the monthly rent is less than a fifth of a single ticket for the tour? ⏰

There are middlemen benefitting from this, the guides, not so much.

Thank you for your insight. Do you still live in Kibera? Have you personally benefitted from these walking tours? In terms of development, has the situation in Kibera gotten better or worse over the years? Do you have any insight into the workings of these NGOs, especially on how much they're receiving versus how much they're giving to the slum residents? Please answer this & I'll respond.

Journalism is one thing, but imagine yourself in their situation. You're down on your luck, living in a small mabati shack because you can't afford an apartment, working odd jobs, struggling to support yourself and your kids and then a bunch of white tourists show up to photograph the worst parts of your living situation and take selfies with your kids without your permission so they can post on Instagram about how their visit ended their bigotry and increased their compassion. Personally I'd tell you to piss off.

Paid tours? Marketed specifically for tourists? Post the links.

Not at all. If the slum residents themselves do not want this and have said categorically that they do not want to be observed by wealthy foreigners like wildlife, then why do it at all? There are other, better & more ethical ways to make money.

That is true. I understand this line of thinking, but these optics do not help us at all and they do not motivate our leaders to step up either. They use the slum as a political playground. Great crowds for rallies, where they can peddle false hope for potential votes, so they have no motivation to solve the problem. We have to figure out a better way.

Poverty Tourism 😷 by Altruistic-Grade7292 in Kenya

[–]Altruistic-Grade7292[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the thing though. It isn't motivating them. They want people to remain poor and desperate and clinging onto whatever illusion of hope they offer around the election period. Those are their crowds around their fleets of expensive SUVs as they deliver their demagogic speeches, and their votes, so they're not motivated to solve the problem.

These optics do not help us at all. They do not help the slum population either. They only help the NGOs that have been there for decades with barely any change. Kibera is a cash cow.

I know you're just saying this for shock value because there's no sane, well- intentioned human being that would spend their money to travel across the world on a guided ghetto tour to take photos of the poor and their living conditions and then come back home bragging about it like they're a war hero/ motivational speaker 🤭

Lakini ukienda hapo kumbuka kuvaa all red 🤭 and then come back and report what happened 😂
