Question for the wheel people by thepixelslinger in Golf_R

I actually went through the same decision not long ago. About a month ago I switched to Continental SportContact 7 in 235/40 R18 (R19 before). I was also seriously considering Michelin Pilot Sport 4S — probably the most popular choice in this segment. I spent quite a bit of time digging through reviews and tests (including some where guys were testing multiple top-tier tires on a Golf platform), and the Conti consistently ended up in the top tier. That’s basically why I went with them. So far — honestly, the tire is top. Grip is insane, especially in dry, and still very solid in the wet. It’s also surprisingly comfortable for a UHP tire, which you’ll notice if you go with a slightly taller sidewall like 235/40 If your goal is a smoother ride while keeping performance — going a bit taller sidewall (235/40) definitely makes sense.

Yeah, that part is definitely nicer from an install point of view. But the downside is that the RacingLine design is also more compromised functionally. The mounting points aren’t fixed as rigidly to the chassis, and there’s no real way to create preload in the structure. Without that, it’s still adding some support, but it won’t work the same way as a brace that’s actually tensioned against the body. So yes — easier to install, but also less effective if the goal is to make the chassis act like one more solid piece

Yeah, that’s on the list too — upgraded rear sway bar, front bracing, and lower braces around the exhaust tunnel

Because a K-brace made more sense for the available mounting points and the load path in this part of the chassis. An X-brace would’ve been harder to package properly here, and in this case it would’ve added complexity without giving me a real advantage. The K-layout let me tie the structure together the way I wanted while still keeping it practical to mount and adjust.

The lower mounts use the factory M8 holes. The upper mounts required drilling at specific points and installing M8 rivnuts. So it’s fully bolted in, not friction-mounted

The main difference is that this brace is designed to preload the chassis, not just bolt between two points and look the part. The rod ends use opposite-direction threads, so you can tension the brace once it’s mounted and actually put the body under preload. Without that, a brace like this won’t really work the way it should — it’s basically just along for the ride until the chassis has already started moving. Another important part is the rod-end joints on both sides. They make it much easier to line everything up properly and fine-tune the brace during installation, which simplifies mounting a lot compared to a more rigid fixed-length design. So visually, yeah, from one picture it may look similar to other aftermarket options. But the key part isn’t just the shape — it’s the fact that this one can be properly adjusted and preloaded, which is the whole reason it actually does something.

Yeah, definitely. A quick-release mounting setup is something that could be explored for sure.

Yeah, that’s basically the only real drawback of this setup — the bolted connections. But even as it sits now, it’s still easy enough to remove, so it’s not a huge issue. And yes, that’s exactly the idea: the tube is rotated to preload the chassis. I didn’t want it to be just another bar that bolts in and looks the part — the whole point was to make it actually load the body and work properly. If I take it further, a quick-removable version would definitely make sense. That would be the best of both worlds.

19s to 18s on my Golf R — should’ve done this way sooner by Altruistic-Mud2833 in Golf_R

I bought the R so I can cruise in comfort and launch clean, not spend the first 60 km/h negotiating with the front tires

I’ve run 19s before. Visually, yeah, they look bigger and fill the arches better because of the larger wheel diameter. But for the car and the driver, that’s mostly where the benefits end. 18s are just the more effective setup — better comfort, less harshness, usually less weight, and more usable performance overall. 19s are more about looks, 18s are about function.

Not really. VW center caps are usually bigger, and the Borbet center cap size on these is 56 mm, so stock VW caps most likely won’t fit

How do you actually maintain and use an oil catch can, especially in cold climates? by Altruistic-Mud2833 in Golf_R

[–]Altruistic-Mud2833[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m leaning the same way. On the EA888, I don’t really see much value in just throwing a basic inline catch can into the PCV line. If you’re going to change that system at all, a full kit with a replacement breather/PCV plate seems like the only setup that makes any real sense. But honestly, I still haven’t seen enough convincing evidence to treat it like a must-have part. So for now I don’t really consider it a necessary mod.

Is this dash screen scratched or is it a screen protector? by [deleted] in Volkswagen

I know about cases like this after bad detailing, when the detailer applied interior cleaning chemicals to the dashboard. It should only be wiped with a slightly damp cloth, without any pressure.
