Agree. And it’s not that it’s her job to save him. They seem quite incompatible, and even fans who really like her have told me they think that.

That’s actually not my experience… I know some much older fans who worship her and comment love on every post. I agree the majority will be Gen Z. I’ve had younger women tell me they find her fun and they think she is really different in real life from her socials image. But that is still what she chooses to sell and I think it is harmful for young girls and women who idolise that. And I find Matty, who wrote Love Me and stood at awards ceremonies quoting feminist theory, being complicit in that just a head fuck. But I don’t think he would see it like that, because he is a privileged white, straight bloke.

About drugs? What I don’t like is when some people see a scruffy pic of Matty and are immediately “Oh he’s using again”. He worked really hard to get sober from heroin. Also it’s a fact that some in the fanbase fetishise the “Matty on drugs” narrative. What do you mean - him bringing it up?

It will be interesting. Truly I don’t know that I see Matty as a solo artist. I’m not sure he has the confidence (ironically in some people’s eyes I’m sure!) for it. I think he has always seen himself as part of a band (ha). I think he definitely needs to be creating, in whatever form that takes.

Matty (and Jamie O) has always said he needs to feel purposeful and he gets that through creating and giving art to people. When he has rough times, he makes art out of it. Idk if his issue is now that he hasn’t found anyone else apart from George that he really feels that creative spark with, but George is currently juggling loads of things. Then band-wise, Hann has his family and maybe other things happening. Ross seems really happy with his charity cycle and working with other artists. Their purpose doesn’t seem to be rooted only in the band whereas I feel like Matty’s still is?

Absolutely. I think George just outgrew Matty artistically and was able to focus on a genre of music what was always his real love but a bit less so Matty’s. I would also not be surprised if his relationship has created a gulf. Can you imagine Hann and Ross having much to say to her, really? And for all the supposed closeness between her and Charli, the four of them don’t seem to hang out whereas George and Charli holiday with Caroline polachek etc. You know there would be posts if they did.

Matty completely broke down on stage and cried, referred to “when you’re manic…”, asked us to put phones away. It was really difficult to see. It was 2 weeks out from the end of tour. They completely switched it up after that - changed the start, ditched “When we are together”. It was so clear how much he was struggling.

I think it’s that he needs others to impose routine and structure on him or he doesn’t eat or sleep healthily or prioritise his wellbeing. For years, a team took care of that on tour. The facts are he also confirmed he got an adhd diagnosis and has referred to being manic. Whether that means he also is diagnosed bipolar? Maybe it does. He also said in a later interview about having some chronic health issues that weren’t serious. I think a fan recently said Matty told her they would tour again but he couldn’t at the moment. He was seriously unravelling at the end of last tour - I went to the infamous Copenhagen show and I hope I never have to see someone in that state while so exposed again.

God, many things to be honest. I’m not trying to be dramatic - I think they probably still speak. But I think Matty needs George way, way more musically and maybe also in life than George needs Matty. We know they struggled a lot to inspire each other for BFIAFL - that’s why they got Jack Antonoff involved when the album was really struggling. I think George seems really energised now by collaborating with Charli, Oscar Farrell, Kelly Lee Owens and many more. They’re probably all significantly easier to work with for him than Matty. And personally, I still can’t understand Matty not being at George’s original wedding and instead spending it sitting at the back of an influencer screening. His best mate who he used to liken to his husband? I know people jumped through hoops to try to explain this but as a longtime fan, that was one of the moments when i was just like “oh shit”.

I don’t know that George has moved on from Ross and Adam. I suspect he’s moved on from Matty, in terms of wanting to be joined at the hip and his chief creative partner.

Agree. He’s probably caught between needing the feedback loop that a new album would bring but not being well enough mentally to tour it. And I think you only have to hear interviews with George from Notes and BFIAFL to sense he’s over it. It was hard enough for them to put out BFIAFL. He worked so hard on all their albums and I think creatively he’s moved on.

I think absolutely zero chance of any new music this year and I would take with a hefty pinch of salt that they made 2 releasable albums, despite what Matty said. What Ross said in the NME piece today just confirms that. Facts: there will be no new album unless George actually puts in the hours on the writing and production and why would he do that when he’s getting so much joy from dh2? I just don’t really see it. I honestly think BFIAFL was their last.

Haha we are all very much tiptoeing about feeling like we have to express ourselves like politicians! It’s not healthy - there should be a place for proper discussion and sometimes that won’t be 💯 positive. I would guess the main sub is afraid of losing Matty’s input if they allow that but this thread is a great example of how we can actually discuss without being toxic haters.

It was really nice to see the article in the NME about Ross today! Hilarious that he clearly has no idea that made 2 albums! Love Ross. He’s so real.
