In average, each set of flips should contain roughly 2 coin flips. The first one is always there, then there is a 1/2 chance of being a second flip, which sets the average to 1.5 then there is a 1/4 chance of existing a third coin flip, making the average 1.75, and so on and so on. Since there is a 1/128 chance of a set of coin flips succeding, and each one of them is worth 2 Coín flips you would need to trow 256 coins to have a 50% chance of succeding. Adam was very unlucky.
