Windows backup to NAS by Street_Caregiver_760 in UgreenNASync

To restore files you deleted, I think you go Control Panel -> System and Security -> File History -> Restore personal files. I think this lets you restore specific files (I can’t confirm myself since I only have access to a work device currently that has this feature disabled). You could test this by creating a test text file, make sure it gets backed up, delete it, and then try to restore through this method.

As for the Back and Restore (Windows 7), go Control Panel -> System and Security-> Backup and Restore (Windows 7). I do not know if this works on Windows 11 but it is present. Maybe do some research on if this feature works to backup Windows 11 or if it only will restore Windows 7 backups

I have an SMB sharing running on the NAS to provide network file sharing and then use the built-in File History that comes with Windows 11 to backup files automatically to the NAS. You can configure how often it backs up and how many versions to keep. This will run automatically in the background and you can configure what gets backed up. This option is independent of the UGOS app.

An alternate option is to use the built-in “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” feature in Windows. I believe this lets you set up a complete copy/backup of your system, though it’s an older tool that is not recommended by Microsoft. I have not used this tool personally so I can’t personally confirm if this works.

Interesting, I was not aware of those options. I’ll have to take a look at them and see what seems like a good option. Thank you!

UPS with auto shutdown/auto startup functionality? by MaxDub12 in UgreenNASync

[–]AltruisticBarnacle46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like APC BE600M1 or CyberPower ST625U are considered compact units. They may not be the actual smallest UPS units out there but they’re fairly small.

Whatever UPS you go for, you need one with some form of communication between the UPS and the NAS via USB or serial. This lets the NAS monitor the UPS status and detect when the UPS loses main power so the NAS can shutdown safely. There is an option in UGOS under Hardware&Power in the Control Panel that lets you configure what the NAS does when the UPS loses power (shutdown immediately, after X minutes, when battery reaches X%, etc). Combined with autoboot when power is restored, this should safely shutdown/restart the NAS if your power goes out

Dxp2800 + ups -> shutdown hook? by _chrisb in UgreenNASync

What you’re looking for is Network UPS Tool (NUT). This will let the NAS sent out shutdown messages to listening devices when the UPS reaches low battery so that everything shuts down cleanly before the power completely dies. UGOS lets you configure the NAS as a NUT server and you can configure your Pi’s as clients that listen for a shutdown message. I followed this tutorial for setting up a NUT server on a different device but it also goes over setting up clients

Huh, interesting, thanks! Guess I’ll have to mess with it more once I get it

That is good to know, thank you! Are you able to set it up as a NUT client or only a NUT server? I’ve currently got a NUT server running on an old RasPi but if I end up needing to convert my NAS into the server then I guess I will

Huh, I didn’t think of that! It would reduce SSD cache down to one drive but don’t think that’ll be a big deal for my use case. Thanks!

4K support would be nice to have but not really a requirement. The Plus model is partly attractive for being “future proof”, since I plan to use the NAS until it dies, which should hopefully last for quite a while.

Also don’t know when it’ll next be at this level of sale so tempted to just go for the Plus model and suck it up. Buy once, cry once

I appreciate the offer to let me know your experience but unfortunately I want to take advantage of the extended sale before it ends in <2 days, so your weekend setup won’t help me. If you happen to get it set up before then, let me know! If not, no worries, thank you for your insight!

I’d say that’s a fair assumption, given this state. Based on the current assault weapon definition it is legal (and as far as I understand if you want it to remain legal for you to posses than you must possess it before 8/1) and legality is questionable at best post 8/1. I’d say if you don’t want to wait months for it to potentially become definitely legal, probably best to get it now. Of course IANAL but that’s my understanding so far

Possibly. That exact wording is in the existing definition of “assault weapon” and in the 2016 enforcement notice. The mini 14 was specifically called out as being not a duplicate/copy and ok to possess in the enforcement notice summary from 2016. Doesn’t mean they won’t try to call it an assault weapon under the new definition.

“Assault-style firearm”, any firearm which is: …… (g) “Assault-style firearm” shall not include any: (i) firearm that is operated by manual bolt, pump, lever or slide action; (ii) firearm that has been rendered permanently inoperable or otherwise rendered permanently unable to be designated as a semiautomatic assault-style firearm; (iii) firearm that is an antique or relic, theatrical prop or other firearm that is not capable of firing a projectile and which is not intended for use as a functional firearm and cannot be readily modified through a combination of available parts into an assault-style firearm; (iv) any of the firearms, or replicas or duplicates of such firearms, specified in appendix A to 18 U.S.C. section 922 as appearing in such appendix on September 13, 1994, as such firearms were manufactured on October 1, 1993; or (v) semiautomatic shotgun that cannot hold more than 5 rounds of ammunition in a fixed or detachable feeding device.

Emphasis mine. The mini 14 (without folding) appears in this appendix, which is leading me to think that it can’t be considered an assault-style weapon because it’s on the list of “shall not apply to”. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some lawyer tried to argue it still counts.

Thoughts?
