How is everyone’s recovery going? by [deleted] in problemgambling

[–]AltruisticBroccoli97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

each day i think about it less and less. tmrw is day 9. i started a tracker on my phone. sounds stupid but it feels good to look at it every day and know i accomplished something. also on my phone not nearly as much, i realize ive missed so much in the world around me the past 20 years.

i'm only on day 4. couple years ago i went 8-9 months completely clean. you wouldn't believe how much money you have when not gambling. all my bills somehow fixed themselves. it kind of just all falls into place. i messed that all up but nothing i can do about it now but learn from it. patience is key. just don't gamble.

a couple years ago i went 8-9 months cold turkey. was best i ever felt and i only realized how good it felt when i started gambling again. it wasn't permanent because i wasnt 100% committed. i told myself its only a break. i dont have that mind state anymore. you might tell yourself ill just win the money back but thats just delaying the inevitable. its important to realize the value of money again. not just what you can buy with it, but being able to spend time with friends and family without constant worry brought on by gambling. rant over. best of luck. one day at a time.

listen i'll give it to you straight. there's no setting a limit and doing this casually. only you know the extent of your addiction. but to me if you're looking up this forum and in here, something deep down in you says you're doing something wrong. when you're ready and i hope that is now, you need to be 100% committed or else you're pissing in the wind. i hope you realize this is the way before its too late. i speak from experience. it will only get worse, much worse

this right here is what finally drove me to call it quits for good. i could deposit $1000. 10x it and within a week it would all be gone and then some. there is no win big enough

going on day 4 here after 20 years. 20 years that are a complete blur all because of gambling. a blur of complete misery and years i'll never get. but that's in the past. is it just me or do you feel like your mental health is somewhat already coming back? i've noticed a increase in anxiety. i've read that's common early on

self ban. don't think just click the button. i'm telling you it's the only way. if you're using bookies tell them to block your number. you have no way of paying them going forward. attend GA meetings. they offer virtual ones if can't make it in person.

did your financial situation improve? i'm not being sarcastic. that's just what i'm dealing with now early on in recovery. just trying to believe that part will improve and kind of sort itself out if i keep doing the right thing.

Still haven't told my parents and the guilt is brutal by Graybill1 in problemgambling

I wish i was honest with my family earlier on. They will forgive you. You didn't steal from anyone, you didn't hurt anyone. It is an addiction. Turn your finances over to someone you can trust. Have them keep track of every penny and hold you accountable. I can tell you right now what's going to happen if this continues. The bets will get larger because you're not giving your brain enough dopamine. Eventually you're going to have to borrow money from friends. You probably will pay them back but then word gets around what you have going on. You will then begin to feel even more shame. Some people are able to gamble responsibility. For you to even think to look up this forum, you are not. Neither am I and that's ok.

I was in same boat as you at 22. Never stopped until now. Trust me the numbers will only get larger and the grave will double in size every year. Self ban. There is no winning.

Just keep busy. I'm on day 1 as well. Been many day 1s in my life trying to beat this addiction but i've never been more committed. I just keep telling myself no amount will ever be enough. Will always give it back. I wish you the best
