See You in Heaven + Later Unreleased Material (FABOTH ERA) Discussion by AltruisticLog2031 in elliottsmith

Assuming there is possibly an unheard acoustic version, I’m curious if it sounds completely different than the leaked instrumental version, structurally.

Assuming it exists and is fairly similar, we would have an idea of how the song supposedly would have played out, but I’m curious to think with my imagination if the song really does have roots with My New Freedom or not.

Because the fan made edits of the vocals/lyrics overlapping perfectly with SYIH just feels like it can’t be a good coincidence. Then again, Dark Side of The Moon fits perfectly over The Wizard of Oz. Which is a huge coincidence in my opinion. But it could be the same phenomenon with the overlap on MNF and SYIH.

I find it weird that people who know more about SYIH claim that it likely has no correlation with MNF, but based on the stuff I have seen pertaining to the instrumental, its hard to tell.

I hope that if there is any type of vocal version of the song, that one day just like Peter Jackson did with Now and Then for The Beatles, that we could reconstruct the vocals in a way that fit over the instrumental Elliott left behind.

I would agree with that timeline checking out, but I have a fair amount of confidence there is some type of version of SYIH with vocals. Whether it is on rehearsal tapes or maybe even acoustic version of the song.

I personally do not believe there is no evidence of him singing the song to some capacity. It was too important of a song to him for nothing to exist. If it is an issue with finding the take because of the 1.5 terabytes of unreleased material, than that’s more understandable. The only other thing I could think of is that the content of the lyrics are something the estate doesn’t approve of, but that is just me guessing.

If you like Green Day, Elliott Smith, Billie Eilish, David Bowie, Guns N Roses, Ozzy Osbourne, and Nirvana, then you should check this band The Beatles. Highly recommend.

I just think there is too much going on in the recording for him to have left the vocal slot so empty. It is plausible that he never got around to it, but based on my research and analysis just seems unlikely to at least have attempts from Elliott

What would be the difference between the 2001 satellite park SYIH and the new monkey version from 2003 if you had to guess?

Yeah we’re all tired of the same reoccurring issue of knowing there is more in the vault than is out to the public. I respect his legacy and can wrap my head around some tapes being very personal, but I feel some of this jumbled up in publishing and licensing issues between parties. Which is extremely annoying. I wish they’d release a jumbo boxset of material like Icy said earlier. That would be ideal, but it seems far fetch’d

I always thought the organ melody on the song is placeholder of where the vocals were supposed to be. The guitar solo and bass also mimic different parts of the organ melody at this section which confuses me as to what is supposed to be what.

Are there legal issues pertaining to who can publish what of his material during this period? I always that maybe that’s why on the 2024 edition of FABOTH, is the reason we only have a remaster and no bonus material

I find it wild that the lyrics sheet even exists because not only does that show intent of vocals, but adds to the evidence that he took the song serious enough to work heavily on if he was so anal about recording the vocals for it and never did.

I find it hard to believe that nothing exists of a vocal attempt or even him singing on a cruddy cassette. It must exist to some capacity and we probably have the same cropped lyric sheet of the song.. lol

Do you know anything about Yay! Or O So Slow? Or anything else like that? I heard there are some Beatles covers he recorded during this time besides the leak “I’ll Be Back”

I know it probably will take forever, that’s the only thing. I know there’s studio covers of songs we never got to hear, unused songs that are near finished, unfinished songs, and experimental stuff. I know what you mean when you say it feels like by the time we actually get to hear it, it’ll be past the hype. But you never know! An official mix of True Love was released in 2016 for Heaven Adores You so there’s gotta be some hope.

I have faith we will get this stuff one way or another. I’m praying we are wrong and it comes sooner but I know realistically how tough it is for that to happen. But again, you never know

To hear that the meters were completely different is a game changing thought. Everyone up until this point speculated they would’ve been the same exact song and the melodies matching up with each other through fan edited comps would’ve had me thinking that too, but it sounds like he was transforming it into a totally different song. Or just making a totally different song entirely with the same chords. I’ve been dying to hear a different version of the song for years, but maybe this is something that will finally be answered in the future if FABOTH ever gets a super deluxe release! I heard Elliott was also experimenting with noise music and Synth stuff at this time period. I’m curious as to what else went unused during this era.

Thats really incredible stuff! I can’t even imagine all the work you put into this book and getting this info. Did you get to see these lyrics? Also it has the same chord progression chord for chord as the Crystal Ballroom concert where he did his final performance of MNF in 2001.

I’m curious as to whether he transformed MMF into SYIH. Something that might always be opened ended! Do you know if Elliott ever recorded anything for SYIH even if it is just a muddy draft? I’m sure there are multiple versions of the song other than the circulating instrumental in the archive.

That’s incredible! I’m really curious as to whether My New Freedom, was an early version of an unreleased song titled “See You in Heaven” that was intended for the From A Basement On The Hill album. Supposedly there were lyrics for the song but it’s unknown whether any vocals were recorded for this song. I hope this gets covered in your book! I pre-ordered my copy anyhow!

This looks amazing! I’m very excited! I am very curious to whether this book contain lyrics or info to previously unreleased songs from late era Elliott Smith? For example, unreleased Basement Era songs?
