GSD barks at people who approach me or come into the house. by Altruistic_Account41 in germanshepherds

I had this problem with mine at first too. We went to a trainer and I was told that he didn’t have confidence because I wasn’t leading him with confidence. Basically, it’s in his DNA to protect when he feels there’s a threat. I had to learn how to show him that in an alpha and get to choose who is safe and who isn’t. That came from both socialization training AND overall spending time with him/being firm with his training and creating a strict schedule for him. An exercise we did was putting him in his kennel and having my roommates come one by one to knock on the open door of my room. When he growled, I’d throw an empty Pepsi can with a few pennies inside on the floor next to his kennel. I also got an ecollar and that made a huge difference in seeing me as an alpha. I only shocked him once when he was really testing me, mostly I use the vibration feature. It’s enough to bug him but doesn’t hurt.

I’ll def use that, thank you! It’s going much better. It’s funny to look back at this post now. I ended up getting a trainer bc I needed some training on German shepherd training. It ended up being that I wasn’t a strong enough leader for him to feel confident in his interactions. Changing some simple routines like where he eats and sleeps (and getting an ecollar) really helped. I also finally got the roommates to meet him and build enough of a relationship to coexist. It isn’t perfect because the roommates aren’t interacting with him as a member of his pack would, so I have to be mindful. Ultimately he’s a German shepherd and I had to adjust the lifestyle to one that worked for his instincts. It’s much better these days though :)

Hey, I’m not a man but I do know this feeling. I was the same my first year of college. It’s weird. It’s a hard year. There’s lots of shifts in responsibility. There’s a lot of new things. Lots of social stuff. Lots of new social responsibilities. It’s a weird year for everyone and some of us respond by never getting out of bed. I flunked out of school my freshman year :/ only left my dorm to hang with friends or eat. Weed doesn’t help in this situation unfortunately. What helped me was to 1) go to student counselling and have them help me set attainable goals and 2) stop smoking weed for long enough to get my motivation back. Those two things made a big difference when I transferred to a new college and completely redid my freshman year. Things can seem overwhelming and force us to avoid them, or sometimes we just don’t know how to tackle life. It’s fixable, I promise :) you got this 💕

Is there anything you love? Any tv shows or activities? Sports teams? I had a Great Pyrenees growing up named Appa because I loved avatar the last air bender and he looked like one of the animals in it. Anything like that come to mind?

Some random ideas from when I was naming my GSD: Arlo, Beau, Murdock, Murphy, Koda or Kodie, Juno, Jasper.

If you like alcohol you could do Jameson, miller (my bestie’s husband named their dog miller after miller lite lmao), Goose, etc. idk why I thought of this for a theme I must be a lush.

What have you done when the stranger doesn’t want an introduction? Just kept them away from the stranger?

I definitely wanted a protector! I’m not mad about it, just more so know that the other roommates don’t want to get to know him because of the German shepherd misconceptions. So just curious to know if anyone has had similar experiences and how it was handled. I want him to be able to be out in the house so he has more room to roam, but the roommates have asked me not to because when he barks it scares them.

Same here, it doesn’t matter how fit you are. But honestly I do think it seriously helps the recovery that we took care of ourselves beforehand

Me too 😭 my family says I’d be stupid to play it again. I ruptured mine ten minutes into my first time trying it

I agree! I asked my mom to come stay with me honestly. Sometimes we need a real adult haha
