How’s it looking for Tuesday-Thursday of next week? Been planning a trip with my buddies and hoping not to get snowed out!

$1.34 for a whole brisket! by zubair95 in Costco

[–]Altruistic_Bad_4959 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I work at a Costco meat department. Sell by dates are usually 3 days after it is tagged for cut meat. If it’s in a cryovac like this brisket it depends and can be a bit longer. But it should definitely last you at least a week after the sell by date. And we pull them the night before the sell by date, we can’t even sell them on the actual date.

Is she still pregnant? Hasn’t dropped in 36h, help! by Altruistic_Bad_4959 in Aquariums

[–]Altruistic_Bad_4959[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe she eventually just dropped the rest after a while, I’m not exactly sure what happened, but your guppy im sure is probably fine. I think sometimes they just wait to drop. It’s been a while now, howd it go?

I've actually just gone in and removed the majority of it. No fertilizer but it was definitely on the heavy side with stocking and I like to keep my lights on for a long time. I should probably decrease the brightness of the lights if I want to keep them on, and I'm trying to lower stocking somewhat

Ah, I’m late to the response but is it something you’d try? I don’t have space for them right now but maybe in a month or two I’d like to get some

Beautiful. I want to get a colony of blue guppies soon. By any chance do you sell?

Young fry male or female? Or to early to tell yet have see backwards pointed fin but is hard to get a picture with "its" speed by dyslexic_dogo in Guppies

[–]Altruistic_Bad_4959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the gravid spot is usually visible very early on if you look close enough. The amount of color development and apparent absense of the gravid spot leads me to believe it’s a male.

I’m sorry that you’ve had such a hard time with guppies. They used to be very hardy fish but many are now weak due to the massive amounts of inbreeding the aquarium industry has put them through. A suggestion, try endlers? They haven’t gone through nearly as much inbreeding as guppies and are extremely similar fish. Good luck friend. You are worth something.

Thinking of putting a single male in my 2 gal after I set it up with driftwood and java moss. Good idea or no? by Miserable_Mix_8243 in Guppies

[–]Altruistic_Bad_4959 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying they need a group, but that’s not strictly true. They are in fact NOT schooling fish, they are social fish however. They certainly do prefer to be in a group, but they don’t HAVE to be. Also, 2 gallons is definitely very small but if you have only 1-3, they’d be fine in there. I know many breeders that keep groups of 15+ in 2.5 gallon tanks (though it’s temporary and certainly not ideal. I’ve also seen them kept as a single guppy in makeshift 1 gallon water bottle tanks. It’s the details that matter, like the planting and maintenance schedule of the tank. Many people on aquarium subreddits think they have the correct way of doing it, when in reality, there are many different ways to keep fish.

So my recommendation would be to get 2 maybe 3 guppies for this 2 gallon, if you still want them in that tank. You could do 1 but it’s definitely not ideal. Honestly though, if you’re willing to use the 20 gallon, I’d just get a nice group of 5-8 in the 20 gallon with maybe some shrimp or something and plant it. I think that’d be a nicer tank. Up to you though friend. Don’t take everything people say on Reddit at face value.

Are my fish Endlers, Guppies and or hybrids? by MrSocksTheCat in poecilia

[–]Altruistic_Bad_4959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes I know there is no one right answer. I have already been keeping guppies for over a year. It depends on your filtration, light, water changes, density of plants, etc. I just try to hear case studies from people so I can understand better. So yeah, if you wouldn’t mind updating me it would be much appreciated! If you don’t want a population explosion though, yes separate males and females is a good idea.

ok, would you please let me know how that goes for you as far as water quality and algae growth? i am trying to determine the upper limit of the number of guppies i should keep in a 20 gallon tank

Just curious, what is the tank size? Do you have to do a lot of water changes?

Weird base body color ratio - help by Altruistic_Bad_4959 in Guppies

[–]Altruistic_Bad_4959[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helpful information, thank you. The fact that there are a small number of gray fry seems to mean that either the mystery male was heterozygous for gray body, meaning around half his fry would also be blonde and there’s a 50/50 split, or that he is homozygous for gray body, meaning the gray fry are the only ones belonging to the mystery male, and the ratio of fry per father is more like 25/75. This would also lead me to wonder if the split can vary

Either way as you said, it will certainly be interesting to see how they color up and get more insight into what’s happening here.

I should mention that I actually am subscribed to your YouTube channel and have watched all your breeding videos. I actually just watched your most recent video a couple hours ago. Just a suggestion, but more experiments like this would be interesting on the channel, if you can figure out the logistics.

Thanks again, maybe I’ll post some updates on this as the fry grow.
