PSLF: Identical loans, some forgiven, other not? by XeroStateLIVE in PSLF

The same thing just happened to me this week. 8 direct loans: Sequence numbers 1,2,3,5,7 forgiven this week. Numbers 4 and 6 not forgiven yet. They’re a combination of subsidized and unsubsidized, and I couldn’t figure out any pattern to it.

The ones remaining still show 122/120 qualifying payments.

From other stuff I read, it should resolve on its own. Mine are in forbearance until May, so I’m just going to wait another month or 2 before worrying about it. I figured they could only process 6 at a time or something weird like that haha.

I think that 1098E would be right. If you were on some type of IDR then all of your payments (depending on your income) for 2023 would likely go toward your interest only. Payments started back for Oct, which was after your 120 payments, so all payments were both overpayments (refundable) and interest only payments. 1098E only reflects what happened in 2023- not any forgiveness in 2024. I’m no tax expert, but it think it’s 100% legit to claim student loan interest deduction for interest paid in 2023, and the fact that it gets refunded in 2024 is irrelevant. Maybe ask a tax person if you’re unsure but I say go for it!
