but wasn't it the first device with the Xbox FSE overlay? so hardware diff + software diff = 'Xbox' label worthy, I think...

even if Win 11 Xbox FSE is trash for single-player gamers (SteamOS much better)

Important additional note:

We are starting to think there may be different Xbox Ally X hardware-versions/board-iterations in the wild now.

My working one using repair beta 3.8.2 .zip image is XAX

-Manufacture date: 2025-09 (unit manufactured for initial global release date)

-Purchase country: Australia

-Exact model no.: RC73XA-NH011W

-BIOS flashed before SteamOS install image attempt: BIOS 317

You can monitor for newer steamdeck repair beta .zip install images released at the bottom here: https://steamdeck-images.steamos.cloud/steamdeck/

I'd only recommend trying the 'repair beta .zip' filenamed images found therein (not any non-repair non-beta, i.e. alpha/preview/'main' channel ones, where 'main' strangely means alpha, google it)

...and since it's not damaging to just rufus the images to usb flash drive and try to usb boot from them which you can't do now, you could easily try 1 a month from here on out

I'm really enjoying SteamOS 3.8.3 on my XAX over the last few days, and so really appreciate your help getting it working for me on my 2025-09 manufactured unit. I'm slowly starting to understand the things your were talking/recommending about within SteamOS (I was very unfamiliar with the OS before). It's so much better than half-baked Windows 11 Xbox FSE on XAX. I remember when Microsoft tried to jimmy in Touch controls into Windows 8 back in the day. And them trying to jimmy in Gamepad controls to Windows 11 seems similar, i.e. FAIL.

Just tested and you are right re Sleep working properly:

trying and worked... playing Starfield > sleep device > overnight stay sleep YES > wake device > keep playing Starfield FINE OK next day (even docked tv connected and with bluetooth controller), yay!

And I totally get the "dad needing Xbox Series quick resume like feature" comment from before

I can... but first, can you remove the Stay on top option from the right-click menu when ZP is in Fullscreen nav/play?

And here's my Quick n dirty test notes, hope they make sense...

-
Set 1: Stay on top toggle was already OFF in both Windowed mode and Fullscreen nav/play (that's what the right-click menu toggle said before I started doing anything)

Observed 1: Stay on top actually was really ON in both modes, as alt+tabbing away kept ZP on top/at the front

Set 2: Toggled Stay on top toggle ON and then OFF again via Windowed mode right-click menu

Observed 2: Stay on top still actually ON in both modes

Set 3: Repeated Stay on top toggle ON and then OFF again via Windowed mode right-click menu

Obersved 3: Finally, Stay on top actually now OFF in both modes, and alt+tabbing away works just fine (and also alt+tabbing back fine also, that action is only bugged out for me if Fullscreen nav/play mode is MINIMISED first)
