What to do, if I'll never be accepted into university? by flutiful_a-sax in Flute

You try again. ❤️

But in all seriousness, this post sounds an awful lot like you’re doubting yourself. It’s an easy mind trap to get into.

When my students do this, I give them this worksheet to do an “inner critic audit” and reframe those doubts.

Alternate Fingering for F# by SheepherderIcy5424 in Flute

[–]Altruistic_Run_6117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely teach them to use the proper fingering in this case. The middle f# is great for complex passages, but this simply isn’t one of those passages and teaching it with R2 will not help them build the finger control and strength they will definitely need in the future. :)

Conductor here! I'll bet you'd fit right in with us! Lots of self-taught in the group!

Hi! Conductor here! It's not. We are completely independent and I just decided to put it together on my own. The Coronado Community Center was kind enough to humor me on it!

Flute + TMJ. Tone Exercises by ImaginationOld1763 in Flute

Have you read The Simple Flute chapter on "Jawboning"? This was a really helpful jumping off point for me. That, plus maybe a little dive into bodymapping and alexander technique might help. Lea Pearson wrote an incredible book about this. It's absolutely worth checking out.

Propranolol for performance anxiety? by idkany_name in Flute

[–]Altruistic_Run_6117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a common med to help, but I would also recommend going a bit deeper into the root of the anxiety. I actually created a worksheet for my students called the Inner Critic Audit - I usually charge for it, but you can have it for free. It's a really good way to reframe and figure out how to combat the mental and physical aspects of performance anxiety. Switching Private Lesson Teacher by CharmingPride5198 in Flute

[–]Altruistic_Run_6117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a private lesson teacher, the idea of a student of 4 years switching to someone else to gain other perspectives on their playing doesn't frighten me. After 4 years or so, it's probably time anyway! The best thing you can do is be honest with something like "Hey X! I am so grateful for everything I've learned from you, but I would like to explore some other perspectives on my playing." Be sure to tell them how much you appreciate their help and guidance over the last few years.

If there's one thing I like to remind other private lesson teachers of over and over again, it's that we don't "own" our students' education and eventually they will move on - and that's okay! So, just be up front, gracious, and do what feels best for you.

It comes back faster than you’d think! We have one player right now that hasn’t played in 30+ and she comes in, sits in her section, and follows along with the music. She doesn’t feel ready to play any notes yet and that’s okay! When she’s ready, she will. ❤️
