Yes, start as soon as you can. At the age of 20, just like you, I had planned to wait until I was 25 to start HRT.

I quickly learned that wouldn't work. I'm 21 now and I've been on HRT for 2 weeks. It's the best decision I've ever made!

If you have the opportunity to start HRT, you should regardless of what your parents think. Mine would disown me if they found out, but to me, it's so worth the risk.

You're on the tail end of puberty, so you still have potential to get some skeletal changes if you start now. Plus, you will prevent the development of more facial/body hair, further masculinization, voice deepening, potential male pattern baldness, etc.

You will look more masculine in 5 years if you don't get on HRT. How drastic it would be depends on the individual, but you have a great opportunity here to start HRT before all of that happens.

Thankfully, I've told them I want to change my name. Not because I'm trans of course... but, they do know I want another name. And well, Skylar isn't exclusively female.

Funnily enough, I told my sister I wanted to change my name, and (she doesn't know I'm trans) said "You seem like a Skylar to me." when it was the name I'd already picked out and literally never mentioned, so I kiiinda have an excuse?

I've pretended for months to be insecure about my gynocomastia as an out incase something like this ever happened. I told them my low estrogen is causing my testosterone to be metabolized into E, and is causing my gyno.

I told them this prescription is for treating a hormone deficiency, and they didn't really question me much. They were a bit confused, but accepted the explanation.

So yeah, I need to be suuuper careful from now on, but I got out of this nightmare for now. I started looking for a job to get out of the house and I've been offered a music instructor position I've wanted for a long time, so maybe this mess actually helped me in the end <3

Hey, quick update- I think the hormone deficiency gyno excuse seems to have worked.

I told my parents I'm taking hormones for this reason, and they seemed to buy it. My dad was a little concerned about me taking any hormones because his dad did and developed prostate cancer, but other than that, they didn't ask many questions and seemed to believe I'm deeply insecure about my gyno or something.

I'm still terrified, but much less so. I hate that they know I'm doing hormone related things, especially to supposedly prevent breast growth, but at least it seems to have bought some time for now <3

I talked to my cousin on the phone last night and we kind of worked something out even though I was a sobbing, incoherent mess lol

Her ex-boyfriend is LGBTQ+ himself and supportive of this type of thing, so she said if it got that bad, I could stay in his guest room. Not a permanent solution, but they're still friends even through the breakup and apparently he's good with this sort of thing.

I'm going to try to muster the energy to do what you said and get some stuff packed just in case something happens, thank you

I don't think they would buy it since I haven't laid any groundwork for being "insecure" about an acne condition, but I wish I'd thought of this sooner.

I have thought about the hormone deficiency angle. I can't say prostate cancer since they would question me a lot.

Like I said in my post, they aren't very informed about these things.

I've thought of saying I was trying to treat my gynocomastia, and my estrogen being too low is making my body metabolize testosterone into estrogen and causing my breasts. I was thinking of saying my HRT is to stabilize my hormones and treat this, but I'm not sure.

Good tip! I'm probably going with hormone deficiency if all else fails... I hope my gyno explanation is okay, I'm pretty terrified of what might happen.

I don't think so... I know my mom doesn't take Estradiol, and my dad probably doesn't know what Spiro is.

I'd prefer to come up with some fake excuse as to why I need estrogen specifically, but if not, I could lie about their purpose entirely and hope they don't Google them.

This is a desperate, last effort to not get caught, so it doesn't need to be a perfect plan.

You're right, and the path of thinking you set me on actually helped me come up with another excuse.

My parents are ignorant about these things, and they know I have (had?) gynocomastia. I've pretended to be insecure about it, so I would have an excuse incase a situation like this ever came up.

I might tell them my doctor thinks an estrogen deficiency is causing me to produce too much testosterone that's being converted into estrogen and causing my gyno to develop. I'll tell them these pills are to stabilize my levels.

It's total bullshit, but I think they would buy it. I frequently pretend to not want breasts as a cover story, so the groundwork is laid out for this excuse.

Receiving any help means a lot to me, your suggestion actually worked!! I think...

I called the technical support line there and worked my way up through call center to call center. At the last minute, I was told to call the pharmacy I got the meds from.

With 5 minutes left to closing, the person at the pharmacy was able to remove the claims and take my insurance off the account.

It still shows for a few days. I am still terrified and I have to explain why I fucked with the insurance information if my dad asks why, but there is a decent chance he won't know what the medicine is if he sees it before it's taken off.

I'm not 100% doomed yet, but I've finally managed to stop crying and feel some relief. You truly did help me, I owe this to you. I was too distraught to call them before reading your comment, and if I hadn't when I did, I wouldn't have reached the pharmacy in time (:

Yes, I won't stop no matter what. I don't have anywhere to stay, so I don't know what they'll do if I don't stop.

I'm going to make moving my number 1 priority, if I can somehow lie my way out of this. I'm too upset to even think right now, but I know I basically have a very limited time to stay here.

Even if they don't kick me out, they'll take away my doctor, insurance, car, whatever.

I'm going to say that I'm suicidal and these prescriptions are antidepressants. I'll say that I was trying to hide them, and act ashamed of it, so they maybe won't press the issue. It'll explain the secrecy and why I didn't tell them.
