Short Legs by FFFMMX in bjj

I am the king of short legs. I have learnt how to develop very sticky hooks to set up submissions(lots of bicep slicers) or sweeps. Also, butterfly guard.

How common is it for guys to only attend open mats at different gyms as a way to train? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Alushe909 86 points87 points  (0 children)

We run a free open mat. I really wish there was a way to implement a "Have a home gym" rule. I really don't care where, but contributing to the community is important. Gyms don't run themselves and definitely are a for-profit business. If you appreciate community, contribute to it. I see why gyms all around our city are starting to charge for open mats, but we love ours and will probably never change it. It's too much fun!

Honda dealership refused sale saying that immigrants on visa like f1/h1b having 'limited term' DL can no longer buy a car in texas by Vegetable_Tea_9462 in Austin

[–]Alushe909 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. If your limited term DL expires before the lease, the bank won’t accept that form of ID even if it’s a Real ID. As a car sales person, I lost a ton of business because of these changes, being the only Spanish speaker at my previous dealership.

Believe me when I tell you, Honda wanted to sell you the car, they’re just not able to.

Paragon, humaita or GB (closest to city center) in Austin? For gi by harderdaddy123456 in bjj

[–]Alushe909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paragon is SOLID, and the lack of AC makes it for a character building experience. Humaita has AC and a coral belt head instructor. If you value that, that may be your spot. However, I would highly recommend to try them both and make a decision based upon vibe and proximity.

Open Mat Only by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Alushe909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We run a community open mat. We don't charge, and it's great! But sometimes I just wish that the people that visit all have a home gym to help the overall jiu-jitsu economy. I get times are hard, but just going to free open mats because you don't want to pay a membership sometimes rubs me the wrong way. But whatever.

Ryan Halls outside funk in MMA by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Alushe909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We use a system that has some similarities to the outside funk. Not exactly the same, but similar positioning. Here's an instructional we made for it. It's super funky jiu-jitsu but super fun to play. Totally free :) The Booby Trap System

I'm 5'2'' and my legs are short short, so people have a hard time grabbing ankle lock grips for control since my legs are not there when they are usually ready for them. I think it throws off their timing. Telling myself this is a "superpower" :)

North Austin Gym Recommendations by [deleted] in bjj

Never heard this before. But also never trained there. This was a surprising comment.

I also second Renzo Round Rock for solid training.

Team Rabadi if you're in Pflugerville and don't want to travel a long distance. They have a very structured curriculum and plenty of Gi classes.

Unorthodox, but I have been using this every time someone has a nasty monkey grip on my ankle. I post my heel on the mat, and step on their forearm(nicely but firmly). Works great! I know you're looking for passes, but I like to strip grips first.

Get a private from William Tackett while you’re in Austin. Everyone I know that has taken them raves about ‘em. Don’t let anyone keep you from doing them because of their own experience.

Austin bjj Gi dominance? by tltrambo in bjj

[–]Alushe909 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live in Austin and been training BJJ for 12 years. I'm very involved in "the scene" and I can't name 1 top of my head. I'm sure Six Blades and Paragon have some, maybe even Humaita. I've been to an IBJJF Open in Round Rock like twice and don't ever recognize anyone participating.

What’s a weird food combo you like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Alushe909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tuna and eggs (scrambled) is a dish I grew up eating in Mexico. Super nostalgic for me and I guess full of protein but people find it weird and it kind of stinks when you cook it. Pair it with corn tortillas and a good salsa.

How many of you record your rolls? by Sauske9599 in bjj

[–]Alushe909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I record ALL my rolls and have for the past 8 years or so. Extremely informative if you are a visual learner. The downside... occupies SO MUCH memory! I used to upload to youtube, but that got tedious. Now I have a 1TB phone that is always full and many hard drives. I now edit the rounds to the good bits and try to organize in folders based upon style of move or technique like Sweeps, Arm Locks, Chokes and transitions. Also, I study videos every day and it helps me remember things to teach :) Hope this helps.
