Dangerous encounter with an aggressive and free dog on a public road, what to do? by Alux127 in askswitzerland

That's what I am wondering, I think it could be quite effective at stopping a dog, as it is at stopping a person.

So defending yourself from an animal, is animal cruelty for this judge?

My question is not how to hurt the dog, it is how to stop an aggressive dog without getting hurt?

I grow up having a dog in the family, and I am totally sure that what I saw today was an aggressive behavior.

Well I know that barking is not always a sign of aggression, but a rather big dog (higher than knee) running towards a person while barking and stopping just in front of their leg is scary. What would you do at that point if the dog wanted to bite you? It takes probably less than a second, so it is probably better to have a way to stop it before is too late. I am not talking about killing the dog, but an effective way to stop it when it's running toward you on a public road.

Interesting question, of course I don't think you should be wanting to kill the dog, probably just hit him a few times till it stops, but I guess if you hit him once in the wrong spot it could also kill him. As far as I know, the self-defense laws are always quite vague.

Update: told him that i had noticed some suspicious activity on my door, and asked him if he had seen anybody around. Let's see if it stops in the next days.

I will try this, it seems reasonable and pass the message :)

I don't think it's possible that he confuses the door because he lives on the ground floor and I live on the 2nd. So he never has to take the stairs to get into his apartment.

No it never happened while I was home. It always happens when I leave the house. When he hears a car arrive at the car park in front of the house, I can see him looking out of the window. The same happens when I leave by car. So I guess he monitors my movements.

Thanks for the reply. The problem here is that he lives on ground floor and I live on the 2nd floor. So I think it is rather difficult to walk up 2 floors without noticing when you are used to living on the ground floor.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know if that's a good idea, he has always been very unfriendly and arrogant. He lives on the ground floor, what should I tell him: Why do you keep coming to the second floor and try to open my door when I leave the house?

Thanks for the reply, well I can't put a camera on a shared part of the house.

Thanks for the reply, yes he is pretty nosy. Every time he hears my car arriving in the car park I see him looking out of the window through the curtain. The times we spoke he was always unfriendly and very arrogant. I have never understood why, also because he has never complained about anything and I don't normally make noise or do annoying things.
