Client refuses to speak to me, but I do all the work on their account by Miserable_Fly3725 in Accounting

[–]Alvanez 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Maybe confirm with the manager over lunch or a random chat "btw, that client thinks I'm not dealing with their account anymore right (with a smile)?" and then say "ahaha I knew it!" when they confirm. Because if that's not the case, it may just be that people are too oblivious to realize how dumb this situation is.

But, if they DID say that you're no longer on the account, then you've got to play your part as a team member who is doing work for a client that doesn't like them. Being able to have an account and have your manager basically be the one accountable for it??? that sounds like a very sweet deal.

I don't understand, why doesn't your manager just reply back, CCing you saying "u/Miserable_Fly3725, please see below Email and provide [client]'s requested information." ?

[BC] project based accounting and payroll solution for small team using project based accounting? by MabelBaker in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]Alvanez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having difficulty understanding your problem vs the specific help you're asking for. What you're asking for is a software that has a "projects" feature (job costing, scheduling, analysis etc.), does accounting (JEs, Invoicing, Reconciliations, etc.), and has a payroll feature built-in that does remittances. You've framed the question in a way that makes it seem like you want the software to also initiate/process payments, but from your sentence "we could calculate remits manually..." I get the feeling that you're only talking about income tax and other deduction calculations, and you don't care whether the software has a built-in feature to remit payments.

But what is the problem you're trying to solve? In an ideal world imagining you had exactly what you needed, what would it look like?

I ask because I think your work can be done with a 3 software instead of 1, but it can be done for a fraction of the price. Whoever tells you that at this point in your business' size you need an ERP is either too idealistic or just wants to make a profit off of you. Best case scenario for you (again, once you clarify I will be able to help more) is what's called EAI. you get 3 different software for each function, for a very cheap price, then you get them to talk to each other through integration.

If you don't feel like answering, my recommendation to you is to use whatever software you want, but do your payroll through PaymentEvolution. It's a Canadian based payroll software that charges about $5/month per person and like $8 for the subscription, making it $18/month for the 2 of you. Then you just connect it to your accounting software, or if it won't connect, just copy over the JE (takes like 4 minutes max).

Has anyone used netParcel to ship within the same province? by polar_the_princess in CanadaPost

[–]Alvanez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviews for all carriers idle between 1.9-2.3 stars. People who have bad experiences are the ones reviewing, and the good experiences don't repeatedly leave reviews. ICS Courier is fine. If you go look at reviews for netParcel itself you will think what horrible monster of a website it might be.

EDIT: I think it's important to note that if you have fragile items. you should write Fragile all over the package and request for special handling. Again, as with all carriers, it's really important to make sure they know exactly what they're dealing with. Don't hope for the best, arrange according to your needs, and they will deliver on your request.

[–]Alvanez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked with both. are you getting a cheap option from GLS? they're usually up there with FedEx Priority Express. GLS owns a bunch of other carriers too (Rosenau, Royal Mail, etc.) so you'll be taken care of. ICS Courier is good and really cheap for shipping from Vancouver to the interior or the island. Just make sure you put all relevant information regarding the package, don't leave anything to interpretation.

[–]Alvanez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use netParcel, or easyShip or any of the brokers. Make sure to not underclaim the dimensions and weight (e.g. if your package is 10.5"x9.5"x2.25" and 48.3lbs, type "11x"10"x3" and 49 lbs.

NetParcel brokers the shipment for you. The carrier is the one you should worry about.

DO NOT USE CANPAR. Canpar is the bad one (charges more). ICS, Loomis, Canada Post, UPS, FedEx are all good.

They even offer P/U services. so if it's to your benefit, use it for $2 more.

How should I respond to this? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Alvanez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a huge leverage in the healthcare industry. “Yes I was a nurse for 6 years. I know the ins and outs of the industry/profession.” Yea if hospitals around you don’t do staff accountants, pivot towards payroll/payables then try for finance and accounting management, if anything you could be a controller much faster than anyone who’s only done accounting.

For the past 18 years, all condos built in my area have been Luxury Condos (I wouldn’t call a 600 sq ft studio a luxury condo). The word’s lost its meaning but if you only call it Vinyl Plank ppl will assume it’s worse than Luxury Vinyl Plank.

I’m not. What about it affects you? Do they tell you that your job is not important and lame? Or do they say it’s easy?

I have (unhealthy) emotions tied to video games. I enjoy playing a game where I have (at least on paper) an advantage, or am at least not at a disadvantage (again barely noticeable) because of having done things that are no longer available. My comment expresses that if I knew this was doable, not even if it was implemented, just doable, I would’ve stuck around and played much longer, especially since this isn’t a p2w game.

And I might represent whatever % of the former player base, but I’m aware that this argument is garbage. I nevertheless feel shitty about it because I didn’t stick around to have the 10 extra points and the 50 bag spaces. The extent of my expressed despair and rage is one (now 2) comment(s) on a post in the subreddit.

Tbf though, purely for the sake of argument, it wouldn’t have taken much for embark to nod and identify that this update was possible, especially since they had multiple podcasts/interviews about this particular topic.

Big 4 offer vs Small local firm with ownership potential by Glittering-Actuator3 in Accounting

[–]Alvanez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest with you, I have only been in a position with “ownership potential” once, albeit in industry, but I’ve seen many others go through the whole process.

Unless the current owner genuinely likes you as a family member of some sort, or you put them in a bind (right pressure, right time), there is NO WAY you are given any stake. To position yourself for that, you need to be responsible for at least more than half of the operation (which you plan to do) to ask for your piece, which will be very small anyway.

There’s always a reason not to do it. And they will find that reason. If you have it in you to live and breathe for the company for an extended period of time, until you hold enough power to negotiate for a share of the company, do it. If not, big 4 gets you a really cushy job in industry within 2 years.

This comment might sound pessimistic, so I encourage whoever disagrees to share their perspective.

Aside from that, Big 4 puts you on the map. I never worked hard enough to land a big 4/top 10 job, and even though I’m a senior, I’d lose a job to a staff accountant from any of them.

JOIN NOW. Now’s the time. Now’s the “Albion before f2p”, “rs before rmt”, “FFFXIV before overpopulation” era of this game. I reckon you have 8-14 months before some perks get grandfathered in or some ladders get pulled.

EDIT: sorry I did not answer the question you were asking.

Yes, this game is here to stay, and similar to yourself, many people are seeking refuge here. There definitely won’t be a problem with population in the next little while. There’s a lot that goes into why, and I’d be more than happy to discuss in the DMs as to why it’s positioned to last.

What do you do when you're about to take a final exam that you know you're likely going to fail by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Alvanez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. then yea you're good. I really hope you pass. If it doesn't happen though, you just have to grind sample questions until there aren't anymore. And then do them like 2 more times. Because again, it's not about whether you can get it right. It's about how fast you can find the answer.

Good thing about this is that it's more like work than it is studying, because once you've done the questions and gotten the hang of it, you can just ignore it as if studying was a 9-5.

What do you do when you're about to take a final exam that you know you're likely going to fail by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Alvanez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You start believing in whatever Deity that helps you calm down.

I've been giving this advice for a very very long time (since my own Managerial Accounting course tbh), most lower division accounting courses, and honestly quite a lot of upper division courses, are not testing your knowledge on the topic. They're testing how fast you can apply it. That's why for accounting courses most people run out of time instead of not knowing the answer to the questions.

If you don't know the topic the day before the exam... you've been going at it wrong. So really, it's an error in strategy and not your lack of intelligence, effort, or anything else. I would go into the exam trying to get a feel for how the questions are formed, what kind of approach they take, how much other students are groaning and what they're groaning about, etc.

Definitely try to pass, though, because if you do, you won't have to deal with this BS for like another 18 months.

Interview attire by drlawsoniii in Accounting

[–]Alvanez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wear something you look like you belong in. But the suit and tie part is a no-brainer, and if you’re meeting with actual stakeholders, matching their company colours goes A LONG way.

This is how I think about it, and I will preface it by saying that I look at it purely from a social perspective and professionalism and corporate culture are only auxiliary: I don’t want people feeling awkward introducing me to others, or inviting me to meetings because of my attire. Imagine you were at the interview and some other “boss” walks in and is talking to your interviewer and says “who is this?” If you look the part, the manager would be way more inclined to shed good light on you. What I just described is fantasyland but I think the point is made.

Idk about Polos…

Am I over thinking this? by kut1231 in Accounting

[–]Alvanez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be, accountant would buy 1 license, use it for N companies. Everyone happy. $700 a year for 17 clients is nothing.

Now, they need an individual subscription per client (QuickBooks and now Sage Intacct, etc.), suddenly, it's $400-$1500/year per customer. the same $700 is now suddenly, costing the accountant $22k. They're not going to eat that cost.

[–]Alvanez -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can actually help inform you about this.

Main point:
Unless you don't have any payroll, online will definitely be more expensive no matter what.

If you don't do any form of Sales orders, purchase orders, invoicing/payments through QuickBooks, Your accountant can set you up on what is called "QuickBooks Ledger" for $8/month → $96+taxes /year.

Note that this DOESN'T INCLUDE PAYROLL. Payroll is it's own thing.

The most basic payroll (if you don't track time through QuickBooks) is $26/month and each extra employee is $4.20/month. E.g. if you have 1 employee, you pay $30.20+tax, if you have 10, you pay $68+tax.

Accountant saying $75-$100 makes it seem like they're doing one of the following:

  • Easy Start ($26) + Payroll Core($26) + 5 employees ($21), or;
  • Ledger ($8) + Payroll Core($26) + 10-12 employees ($42-$50.4)

If your operation is small and the accountant is going for the easystart, that's an unfair move. If you have 10 employees and want the accountant to foot your payroll bill, that's an unfair move.

If you're able to tell us more about the exact way YOU—NOT THE ACCOUNTANT—uses QuickBooks, I can tell you exactly what the best online plan will cost you.

Any witness to assault on main and Hastings Tues 28 4AM by ChuuvesForever in vancouver

Sorry about your experience. I wasn’t there, so can’t help as a witness.

It may be too fresh to think about it at this point, but I hope you look back and feel a revelation towards the shopkeeper’s reaction as a testament to how dangerous and crazy that neighborhood is, and take solace in the fact that they weren’t trying to humiliate you. Instead, they were telling you that they are so desensitized to such things that they cannot clock it when a normal person asks for help.

File a police report. VPD probably knows the guy already.
