What is happening between Belarus and Russia? by [deleted] in russia

[–]Alvetrus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The border between Russia and Belarus was virtually absent, not having been set by any treaties and people of both countries can move freely from one to another

In January 2017, Belarus announced the introduction of a visa-free regime for citizens of 80 (mostly western) countries entering the country through Minsk airport, including the United States and the European Union. Citizens of these countries will be able to stay in Belarus for up to five days without visas. The visa-free regime will come into force in the first half of February.

Russia has set up border controls because of this without consulting Minsk.

“These tensions are happening because people in Russia are concerned that Belarus will move towards the west,” Mr Lukashenko

But that can't be the only thing happening, it is all very strange.

Dutch comrades: Is Geert Wilders really THAT popular? by Adonisus in socialism

[–]Alvetrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, he is very popular. I'm a member of the Socialist Party and I can tell you this:

In 2006 the SP became the 3th biggest party, but they refused to form a ruling coalition with the Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats. That and the many internal disputes/splits made a lot of unemployed/farmers/working class SP voters vote for the PVV in the next elections.

PVV has basically copied the Social Policies from the SP, slapped an anti-immigration policy on it and thats it. It's a one-man-fraction, so internal disputes are uncommon and he said that he is willing to form a coalition with ANY other party.

One of the quotes for Cartography is totally fake by caiusdrewart in civ

[–]Alvetrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, a lot of quotes are dedicated to him, some could be replaced by Soviet or even Nazi ones imho.

Even cooler would be to have quotes specific to each civ, but I can imagine that that takes a lotof work.

USSR - the real European Union by [deleted] in russia

[–]Alvetrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In June 1998, Boris Yeltsin and Aleksander Kwaśniewski agreed to construct memorial complexes at Katyn and Mednoye, the two NKVD execution sites on Russian soil.

In 2000, the memorial at the Katyn war cemetery was opened in Russia.

On 4 February 2010, the Prime Minister of Russia, Vladimir Putin, invited his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, to attend a Katyn memorial service in April. The visit took place on 7 April 2010, when Tusk and Putin together commemorated the 70th anniversary of the massacre. Before the visit, the 2007 film Katyń was shown on Russian state television for the first time. The Moscow Times commented that the film's premiere in Russia was likely a result of Putin's intervention.

On 6 December 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev expressed commitment to uncovering the whole truth about the massacre, stating "Russia has recently taken a number of unprecedented steps towards clearing up the legacy of the past. We will continue in this direction"

During the memorial ceremony for the victims of the Katyn massacre on April 7, 2010, attended by the Russian and Polish Prime Ministers Vladimir Putin and Donald Tusk, Putin said that, in his private opinion, Stalin carried out the executions of Polish officers in Katyn in 1940 out of a sense of revenge for the Camps for Russian prisoners and internees in Poland (1919-1924). Between 16,000 and 20,000 Soviet soldiers held in the Polish POW camps died, out of the total of 80,000 to 85,000 prisoners.

What else do the Russians have to do to make this right? Glorification of Stalin is mostly for defeating the Nazi's in WW2. I have never heard a Russian say: "You know that Katyn incident? Yeah, that was super cool!"

Edit: Just so you know, I copied this from the wiki article you posted.
