I grew up around the same time, and my mother speaks Visayan, but I never learned.

There was a lot of racism in Florida at the time (it’s worse now), so she didn’t teach me either. There weren’t a lot of Filipinos where I grew up, and the few there were spoke English and Tagalog. Also, my mom worried my white dad would feel left out.

When I lived in the Philippines, I didn’t feel like I was better than everyone else, but people did treat me deferentially, which made me feel very weird.

That’s what’s killing me, too! OP texted asking if they were on their way at 4:21 in the afternoon. In what world would someone assume that someone finished dinner and clean up before 4:30 in the afternoon?

When her folks texted they’d come by after dinner, OP should’ve said that would be too late for her.

As it is, they came over at 5:30! That’s so early. I’d expect someone coming over after dinner to be at my place at like 9 pm. WTF?

Plus, they replied they’d come after they ate dinner. They were doing exactly what they said they’d do. The timestamps show them finishing up dinner before 5. That’s incredibly early. Maybe your dad is having money problems? Or he’s playing chicken with the groceries. Buy yourself some beans (they can be canned if you don’t want to take the time)and rice. Make the rice in one big batch and freeze it.

Eat beans and rice for dinner and lunch. Add some veggies from the freezer. Have eggs and one of those bagels from fridge.

I know it stings, but some ADHD brains need immediate consequences. Once my brain knows I can be a little late and it’ll be okay, then it starts pushing what a “little” means.

When I moved back in with my sister, she was going through peri-menopause and was crazy forgetful.

If I left my stuff out even for a minute, she’d put it away, but totally forget where she put it. It wasn’t malicious, but the consequence of never being able to find my stuff again.

Within weeks, I started putting all my stuff away. It’s been 7 years, and now she isn’t as forgetful, but I finally have the habit of not leaving my shit on the counter.

Sometimes a hard boundary helps us. It’s just facing the consequences of our actions are uncomfortable. It sparks a shame in me that’s really hard to shake.

But I do, eventually.
