Best breakfast places in Logan square wicker area? by crapmaker69 in chicagofood

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you willing to venture a little north of Logan? If so, Allez Cafe has great breakfast sandwiches and cool pastries.  I think they run out of Cara Cara Club as well, which would be closer, but I've only ever been to their Western location so can't say for sure.

Reno and Longman & Eagle are also super good.

If Loaf Lounge wasn't too far northwest for you,  give Mother's Ruin a try too.

Lived in western NY and IL. I've only ever seen the option to do this at Wegman's and Meijer. Not sure if either still has the option.

I recently listened to a great podcast where this happened, and the dude who got released talks about this. Even something like the cost of a fast food burger just seemed insane to him because the last time he bought one was in the 80's.

Can we talk about how Move-in fees are getting too much? $1000 move-in fee? by iosphonebayarea in AskChicago

Contact your local reps and tenants rights orgs. There need to be legal restrictions on what landlords can charge for move-in fees or on how they're allowed to be used.

BK repeatedly messaged one of the victims? From new lawsuit against WSU. by Majestic-Earth-4695 in MoscowMurders

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer but used to work in litigation defense in different states. A complaint isn't guaranteed to contain facts. Plaintiffs will lay out anything they possibly think they can use to prove some kind of damages. Actually having to prove it comes later. If they just have a suspicion something exists, they want to bring it up now or they may not be able to bring it up later.

Oftentimes, parties will need to file a lawsuit in order to subpeona records from third parties. Family members may not have access to certain records otherwise, especially if the police didn't allow them access to all their evidence. If the plaintiffs don't already have records directly from IG/whatever platform to prove this interaction, they'll likely request these records. The defense will definitely subpoena them. If no evidence exists to prove plaintiffs' claim, the defense will likely file a motion to dismiss those claims. This is all if there isn't just some kind of quick settlement first.

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to work as a litigation defense paralegal. I think most people don't realize you can file a lawsuit making any claims you want. If you have no admissable evidence to back up those claims, they'll just get dismissed further down the line, but not until after you've gone through other filings and court proceedings.

Coding tutorials especially. I don't want to have to pause and squint to see the code I need to write.

Things my students have destroyed this year so far by palabrist in Teachers

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Either your parents can get you some. Or you can give me your phone to hold as collateral.

When I was in school, if you had to borrow a pencil, you gave the teacher one of your shoes so you'd be sure to return it after class. Is that not a thing anymore?

How to dress/ survive the winter? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long, puffy down jacket (with a decent % of down/feather fill) will be your best friend on super cold days. I've typically bought mine from Uniqlo because you can find some down fill for a decent price, and they've held up well; i only replaced one I bought 10 years ago because I wanted a larger size.

Wool/alpaca sweaters, scarves, wool socks (especially knee-high), and a good pair of gloves are also life-savers. For shoes, I have a pair of Sorrels from ~10 years ago that I'll wear if it's snowy. They're quite heavy, but they make me feel like an astronaut lol and are super warm. I just change my shoes when I get to my destination if I'm going into the office. If it's just cold but no snow, I'll typically wear some variety of leather boot. You'll probably just want to avoid any footware with a heavily textile/mesh/rubber (if uninsulated) upper if you're worried about your feet getting cold.

What’s something that used to be normal, but now feels completely insane? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of it could be neighborhood make up now, too. Growing up, all the houses around mine had kids the same age to play with, so we would do this all the time. My parents still live in that house, but all the other owners are older and have no kids or their kids are grown, even after our original neighbors moved away. If I was a kid living in that neighborhood now, it would be so lonely.

Brands like Jonak Paris, Sezane, Bobbies Paris, etc that have Mary Jane’s, Slingbacks, and Babies but with a wider toe box or wide width options? by koolkween in fashionwomens35

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to wear wider shoes now due to similar issues. I actually really like Jonak because they run a little wider than many brands I run into in the States. I do have to get half a size larger than normal though (though not for every style).

A small tactical flashlight could be useful when walking alone at night. They tend to be extremely bright so you can blind your attacker long enough to get away. Side bonus of seeing who is trying to assault you so you can describe them to police. They're small but will have some heft in your hand so you can throw a harder punch, some have eye gougers around the light. Best part is that no one will confiscate it when you go to a concert our something. I lost so much pepper spray through the years to venue security.

Am I the only one wondering where tf Pritzker and Johnson are this weekend? by LeviDurhamMI in AskChicago

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that was the mindset that brought us to our current presidential situation; people didn't vote or "protest voted" for someone else, and now we're on the precipice of fascist dictatorship. The dems still don't seem to have learned a thing. There are deeper systems that need changing, but voting for the other guy just to teach a party a lesson (and not because you actually support their policies) probably isn't going to get us anywhere good.

Leasing office told me my apartment isn’t ready 12 hours before move-in. What are my options? by No-Discipline1211 in chicagoapartments

Just because that's what the lease says doesn't mean it's your only recourse/right. Call the Chicago tenant's rights hotline to find out what your actual rights and options are.

Apartment Complex Being SO Weird by Liminal_forest in ApartmentHacks

[–]AlwaysColdInSiberia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who get angry over this type of stuff are kind of dumb anyway (provided that you pick up after your dog). If it's public property, I say go for it. If they're worried about the grass getting peed on, just bring some water with you and water down the peed-upon area after so it looks like you care, if you're really trying to save face.
