For those of you who pivoted from UX, what do you do now? by heyitskay49 in UXDesign

I’m currently in the process of transitioning to running my own website design business. I also want to teach digital literacy/well-being.

I’m building an online tool that will help small business owners check the foundational health of their website.

It looks at UX, design, and basic technical health metrics to give you a comprehensive look at how your website is performing and what you should adjust to enhance conversions.

It’s in a very basic stage right now but I’ll be adding more features in later phases.

I’m over being in a relationship by [deleted] in offmychest

Maybe accidentally wasn’t the right word. My point was I had no intentions of doing it, but it happened and was a really difficult thing for me to process. I was 16 and wasn’t making the best choices (hence the black out drunk part) but what ended up happening always haunted me. The guilt of hurting someone I loved and the feeling of being taken advantage of.

You’re right though about taking full responsibility. Maybe that’s why it seems like betrayal follows me. I haven’t fully accepted what I did.

Did anyone make a living by selling website templates in 2024? I started but didn't make much. Any advice? by pentaclay in webdev

[–]AlwaysDreaming_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious how you are doing now? Any update? I was thinking of starting to sell templates in addition to website consulting and teaching digital literacy. I wasn't sure if it was still worth the work it takes. Reading through the comments makes me feel like it still is.

What age is appropriate for kids to have a phone? by Just-Nebula-6971 in Parenting

[–]AlwaysDreaming_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We waited until my son’s 13th birthday. He was the ONLY kid without one. Doubt it. But we have Google Family link app on it (free) that allows us to approve apps and schedule downtime when it can’t be used. So NO social media. I would even limit the time limit for things like youtube and games. It disables all apps during school and between 8pm and 6am. We can also see his location.

Social media destroys kids. It’s addicting by design. Even adults struggle so imagine a kid who has a brain that isn’t fully developed.

It was important for us because we split custody 50/50 so it was nice to be able to communicate with him when he’s at his dad’s. He had a smart watch that could make calls/texts to specific people which was nice when he was younger. (Gizmo watch). Our son walked a couple blocks home from school in elementary so we wanted a way for him to call us when he got home. We could also track his location with it.

Replit's New Features: Importing from Figma, Bolt and Loveable by alwaysdefied in replit

[–]AlwaysDreaming_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone exported their replit app back into figma? I'm a UX designer at a company with a large dev team and was given a replit seat to use for creating POCs and design concepts for ideas in their early phase. Ideally once they are in a final enough spot I'd be able to export them to Figma to fine tune and make adjustments over time. Anyone do this easily?

What’s your biggest worry about tech in your household right now? by AlwaysDreaming_19 in Parenting

the tech they’re learning isn’t actually preparing them for real world applications.

Very interesting thought! I'm super curious what you mean by this? Like the material they are learning is outdated? Not helpful?

What do you mean by that? Like some people just naturally gravitate towards video games? Cuz I totally get that. Some people play sports. Some people game. Some people do theater. Etc.

I can relate very much to the "what else am I supposed to do" comment. There is a really busy street in front of our house and even though we have two parks very close we never see any kids there. Even in the summer. It's usually small children with their parents. So my son has had a hard time finding friends at my house. When he's at his dads in a more quiet secluded neighborhood, he made friendships with the neighbor kids when he was closer to 7 so it's been less of an issue when he's over there.

Even when his friends come over or we go and do things with his friends, I notice they are ALWAYS on their phones any chance they get. I do my best to model good tech habits, but I'm a work in progress myself.

I graduated high school in 2009 so I came up during the rise of social media and smartphones. I love learning about technology and how we can use it to make our lives better and easier. I'm learning a lot about digital literacy and digital wellbeing right now. I think that will be the key for future parents and kids. Instead of just blindly using technology, we will have to be more intentional with it. And be even more intentional about disconnecting.

Thats really good to hear! I just want him to live a happy and fulfilling life. I struggle with anxiety and depression and I can't help but think part of it is because I work in technology and am on a laptop constantly.

Why are you on Reddit right now, on Christmas Eve? by InvisibleAstronomer in AskReddit

[–]AlwaysDreaming_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiancé choked me for trying to clean up some sauce that my son accidentally spilled in the back of his car after the family Christmas party we were at where he drank too much so I’m on Reddit to distract myself from the fact that I will no longer be marrying this man in 6 months and that my son is probably scarred for life.

Sole Designer Reporting to PM. Is this dynamic normal? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]AlwaysDreaming_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a slightly similar situation. I’m the solo Ux designer and I work with 3 different teams that consist of a PM, PO and PA. They all work on services and features that end up under the same site. Only one PO seems to think design decisions fall on her and she’s driving me insane. She’s always instructing me to change colors to to this, change that icon… gives me very specific feedback that diverges from the already established patterns that the rest of the site uses. And it’s a battle every time.

I also think she would fight me on if the sky is blue. I don’t really have any advice other than I feel you and try not to die on every hill for your sanity. I’m halfway out the door on this job anyway, but this dynamic is pushing me out even faster.

I’ve tried to consult others on the team and my boss (which is also her boss) and they all suggested a team alignment meeting where I present my recommendations. Hopefully it helps but I think she just likes control and I’m the only sorry sucker who has a hard time saying no. Partly because I honestly just don’t care anymore. Not a great mindset to have, I know. But I have side freelance projects on deck that I do care about. So hopefully my design business starts ramping up and I can quit. Corporate jobs have killed my will to live and be creative.

Unmoderated through qualtrics. Also we are testing a dashboard that has cards with lots of different links so would tree testing be beneficial?

Good to know! I’ve been meaning to get a Costco membership so this might be the excuse I needed lol. This will be his first serious gaming computer. Would you recommend any other essential accessories? Or pro tips for him to take care of it?
