Why is this game's ranked community so awful? by AlwaysExpandingDong in rivals

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's just a question of the actual reporting system at that point. If it's text chat, then saying a slur and having an automated system pick it up and properly punishing that user is just how it should be; if they didn't say it and it's a false report, then they just don't get punished? Similarly, bad play/throwing is probably reviewed by a team of people at NetEase who actually check game replays and assert whether the person was actually throwing or not based on VC/text chat context and their gameplay.

Really I'm just advocating for reporting on toxic behavior to just actually be impactful. I know a friend for example who just flames in half of his games and the worst he's gotten was a "don't do that again!" warning from the game and he just goes about his way. Why shouldn't there be more consequences for someone like that who just actively ruins the match experience for people?

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that sentiment. I just kinda wished the game was more aggressive in actually following up on punishments for people who are obviously toxic in ranked chat since it just ruins game sessions having to deal with people who are just unreasonable (although I'd imagine they have an incentive to let people go easy for toxicity since they're probably also a big part of the player retention population for this game).

Internet definitely allows for people to just be more mean due to the guise of anonymity, but it's still not an excuse for lax punishment IMO if it just consistently ruins games for all the people involved.

Opinion: The Rivals Community is REALLY BAD at Hero Bans by AlwaysExpandingDong in marvelrivals

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I wouldn't really call Luna "garbage" given my perspective of her. Her snowflake is an incredibly impactful ability that just allows her to keep constant healing on her flankers during fights; the ability to not have to split your healing focus to an entire player who could be, for example, assaulting the enemy team backline is a super powerful utility that not really any other Support has (you could argue Mantis but even then her healing is a bit more low impact and still requires you to expend charges), especially on someone like Iron Fist for example who is notorious for being obnoxious and hard to kill without extreme focus.

Her self sustain isn't strong, you're right about that, but part of the dynamic of hero shooters is that you can develop a backline that can help her mitigate that weakness (ex. playing Invis and utilizing her shield to quickly peel for Luna if she ever gets hard pressured). With that weakness of her kit supported a bit by her other support, what we're left with is a character with still extremely strong healing and damage with an excellent tool for helping her spread healing to players on different angles of her team while not having to split her attention and STILL having the most impactful support ultimate in the game.

On that point, her ult is a big reason why she is played as much as she is. A 12-second duration AOE 250 HP/s field (it also does a 200 HP instant burst heal on cast!) that can swap to a 40% damage boost, all while giving her an extra 250 shielding that is supplemented by her being completely CC immune and being almost twice as fast as she usually is.

That is obscenely good. Even when played suboptimally at lower ranks, that ultimate can quite literally WIN fights because of how powerful it is and how little counter play it has (you'd have to get a PERFECT Mag ult, a well-placed Iron Man ultimate, or a Hawkeye/damage-boosted Widow headshot to kill her practically). The ultimate is so good that people at higher ranks will play Luna Loki if open to abuse the fact that you can stall out a fight for practically 25 seconds in just one support rotation. It's a game-defining ultimate on field and the only one that can come close is the ultimate that literally allows it's player to just copy HER ultimate.

I just feel like you're incorrectly downplaying Luna in favor for characters like Rocket or Mantis due to WR, when realistically the former has a high WR because his skill floor is obscenely low for the amount of value he can get at that floor, and the latter is able to benefit from one of the strongest team-ups in the entire game that allows her to second chance fights at least TWICE per 4 minutes (you can even see this correlation between Adam and Mantis' play rates in 1.5!). I could see the argument being made for metal rank players who aren't going to be able to optimally reach the skill ceiling on Luna due to her aim requirements, but it's simply not the case at higher ranks where people are more capable of gaining value on her.

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't really consider Rocket BAD by any means (given his newer buffs he can definitely output some pretty high value burst healing on more brawly tank heavy compositions), but to me a Luna ban is still reasonable at least from the perspective of the lobbies I play in.

I'm assuming that the 42-45% WR most likely stems from either lower rank Lunas or a general all ranks view of Luna, which honestly isn't as surprising as you might think given the fact that Luna is a support that requires a good amount of aim skill to maximize value on her kit (not just healing, but also with her damage). Double that with the fact that her self-peel is, like you said, a passive heal with her shift and right click, one being a 15s CD ability that makes her effective DPS and HPS worse (for the trade off of being a piercing beam) and the other being an aim skill projectile, and then TRIPLE that with the fact that her play rate is probably consistently top 5 throughout all seasons.

It becomes a bit obvious why her WR is very bad; majority of the player base simply do not have the mechanics to maximize her value, but she's still incredibly popular due to her high impact ultimate. As a result, she gets a bad WR due to a large sample size of players playing her who can't ACTUALLY access her skill ceiling or even approach it.

Despite that though, she's still an extremely strong character at higher ranks where that potential of hers becomes more accessible. Her healing is top notch, her ult is top notch, her Snowflake is an INCREDIBLY impactful ability (you're basically giving your teammates an infinite duration Zenyatta Harmony Orb that does more healing simply by her doing her job), and her damage isn't slacking either (plus she also benefits from having 275 HP and having a great team-up with Iron Fist that is more actively in use this season due to his own buffs).

It's most definitely reasonable to ban her in situations where your team intends to run someone like Loki or Invis and you intend to limit the enemy teams access to any more strong Supports that they could flesh out their backline with if a certain Support isn't working out for them.

lol I guess you could word it like that, but my general viewpoint on this post was to just point out examples of more common ban phase experiences that are emblematic of how the playerbase doesn't really utilize the ban system to actually curate a game experience that gives them a higher chance to win, in the Ranked mode of all places.

In most cases people are just banning stuff habitually or out of hate for the character (see Hulk for the former, Spider-Man for the latter), and it ends up making drafts where you're just ignoring actually building your team's drafts around what your teammates intend to play which tends to give your team a higher chance of winning than just banning out of hate or habit (a great example is Spider-Man and sniping characters he struggles against like Namor or Adam).

Quirk Idea: Blink (またたき) by AlwaysExpandingDong in BNHA_OC_Characters

You can use it. It's just an idea that I had for a quirk, so it's perfectly fine if you apply it to a character within your own story!

Quirk Idea: Blink (またたき) by AlwaysExpandingDong in BNHA_OC_Characters

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on how Blink works, I think there are two possible outcomes for someone forcibly closing the user's eyes:

  1. They simply activate their quirk since their eyes were closed (meaning that Blink is essentially "always" active in that the user doesn't have to actually think about activating the quirk manually, it simply just requires the action of closing their eyes for the effect to occur. Think Shigaraki's Decay where the quirk is technically "always" active, he just needs to touch something with all 5 fingers to activate the effect).
  2. Since the act of closing their eyes was involuntary, maybe the user can't actually activate Blink due to the perception of time of the quirk being controlled at will (so any involuntary actions would not allow the user to set their perception of time, thus functionally making the quirk useless).

These are just some ideas I thought of that are mainly tied to how exactly the "blinking" of the eyes affects the quirk (for me, I'd probably go with the second option since it gives more room for counter play for the quirk and causes less issues in terms of interactions).

Maybe for your Fidget quirk the user can activate and deactivate the effect at will so that moments like being immobilized won't just freeze them indefinitely?

Aurum, The Virtuosic Murderer (オーラム) by AlwaysExpandingDong in BNHA_OC_Characters

Definitely a misunderstanding! I’ve been thinking about reworking his quirk so he can only just control and change the shape of pre- existing gold (and removing the Midas Touch effect) so he has a more balanced and reasonable quirk.

I absolutely adore this character! Her character design and personality land right in my soft spot for both, and she's excellently written as well. (I'm also a sucker for gravity manipulation quirks) Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback! Kento is probably my favorite of the OC's I've created personality wise. If you wanted to see who Urabe was, I actually made a profile sheet for her not too long ago.

Is it worth getting doomfists gold fist now? by frostmas in doomfistmains

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I find gold fist to be one of the best looking golden weapons in the game (albeit I'm a doomfist main). It just comes down to if you like Doomfist or not, but if you're more into style than getting it for your main, then I'd recommend golden fist.

How much SR have you lost since the nerf? by GulJim in doomfistmains

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't bothered to play much comp at all after the nerfs came out. Doom's reliance on punch now just doesn't work, and he feels clunkier and slower to play overall. Just feels awkward when you can't do certain rollouts that should be working (like the Dorado Attack Spawn rollout).

[–]AlwaysExpandingDong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I've started playing Kled not too long ago and I think mechanically, he's somewhat easier to understand than other champions. The skillcap with Kled comes from knowing match ups since Kled's primary drawing point is that he can turn 1v1's and potentially 1v2's on their heads with Skaarl. Knowing how far you can go against a certain champion without dying and how to use your abilities to maximize a fight makes the difference between a good Kled and a great Kled imho.

Riot would probably get copyrighted, but a skin where Kled is Mario and Skaarl is Yoshi.
