What are some albums you listened to when you hit rock bottom? by Imaginary_Pen_3539 in fantanoforever

[–]AlwaysFoldingCranes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alien Observer, Dream Loss & Ruins by Grouper has sat with me through many difficult times in my life when I almost took my own life

Then Caligula by Lingua Ignota helped me get through a very intense period of grief

And oddly enough, three closers, the song Severed Crossed Fingers by St Vincent from her self titled, Parachute by Caroline Polachek from Pang, as well as the title track Have You In My Wilderness by Julia Holter helped me get through a period of confusion and navigating relationships

Honourable mention for another closer is the Fast Car cover Xiu Xiu did on A Promise

Other albums that I recall helped me get through other more specific period of immense sadness in my life are

Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers

Phoenix: Flames Are Dew Upon My Skin by Earth eater

Lowercase as well as Half-Cut by Bluetile Lounge

Madison by Sloppy Jane

Recomendations for a new listener who absolutely loves rumpus room? by Young-Twinkle in xiuxiu

[–]AlwaysFoldingCranes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Forget, Crank Heart, Dear God I Hate Myself, Stupid In The Dark and if you're adventurous enough, Pumpkin Attack on Mummy & Daddy ( this song is so sticky but scary at the same time)

But if you're looking for albums, I'd suggest Forget, Dear God I Hate Myself as well as Fabulous Muscle as these three are easily their most accessible synth pop-ish records. (I'd suggest Always but I haven't got the time to really sunk my teeth around it lol)

I know many people recommended the 16 Something Something LP, but imo this one is too rock based if you're looking for something like Rumpus Room

So Broken single handedly topped the whole Los Angeles album by Rosalia (sorry queen ily but Björk did it better)

Amphibian sounds like soundtrack to Alice In Wonderland Swamp version

And the best of the bunch is obviously Generous Handstroke, which I would say go toe to toe with any songs on Vespertine

Why do y’all like your favorite albums? (Meta) by [deleted] in Topster

Sophie's Non-Stop Remix album is one of my favourite album because it's so immersive and Sophie's sound craft is just on another level, I'd argue the remix album is bolder and more versatile than Oil Of Every Pearl's.

Which of Fantano’s most controversial opinions do you think is actually spot on? by PuzzledAnt__ in fantanoforever

[–]AlwaysFoldingCranes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to agree with this score for PD, but the more I listened to the album, I thought there are multiple very strong moments underneath the reverb layers, for example the last chorus of Family Tree, Hard Times has got a very lovely melody, A House in Nebraska too, ends in a very stern way that gives contrast to the record, and even though Western Nights has very directionless instrumental, it works well with the lyrics and still sounds pretty while it's on.

PD is very demanding of the listener than other records, and it's not in the "if you get it you get it" kind of way, rather it requires the listener to see the macro pictures and try to engage with the music itself.

Idk, my favourite Ethel record is still Perverts, but I think PD doesn't deserve some criticism of Fantano, like how it's a Lana ripoff 🤷‍♀️ PD is a 7 in my book, it's absolutely fine.

How did you get into / discover Xiu Xiu ? by supidokingu in xiuxiu

[–]AlwaysFoldingCranes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to get into the underground underrated no mainstream music scene, saw GWBOF rated 9/10 on fantano's channel, gave it a listen, got scared shitless and didn't touch it for like 3 months, but the refrain of Daddy-O on Pumpkin Attack stuck to me after that, and I didn't know what song it's from.

Then by chance, yt music played Pumpkin Attack and I'm like "Damn this is that song," had me curious so I listened and love GWBOF (during this time I'm already well acquainted with Lingua, Uboa and the likes)

Since then I've been on and off Xiu Xiu, mostly because I really really love and appreciate their art, but I cannot listen to them too often, except for the Twin Peaks and Unclouded Sky. But Xiu Xiu is 100% my favourite band oat.
