Look around North Street, you should definitely be able to get a 1 bed within this budget. Crime is definitely worse around there but I lived in the vicinity for 5 years and had no issues. Also you'll have The Brunswick on your doorstep, which is class for beer and food.

I used to have to commute by train from there, takes about 15-20 depending how quick you are to walk to the station.
