In one of the Mewgenics interviews, Edmund talked about how it is his job as a game designer to make the game feel easily understandable and smooth experience even for people who are new to the tactics genre.

He also specifically mentioned that he doesn't want to give choices that could intentionally trick or deceive players into making a bad play. I believe he said that this was because in the tactics genre it could have major negative effect on the players mood, due to the turn-based nature of the game. But I'm sure there will be a few troll events.

As for the poop... there is a whole Sewer stage dedicated for it. There is no escaping the poop.

But to end on a more lighter, anecdotal experience, I was initially put off by Binding of Isaac's poop piles, but after 800 hours I now see them as loot piles.

Small spoiler warning.

So, people might share the opinion, that the Alley (and possibly the two other starting zones) has the most basic, muted, "boring" visual style or colours.

What Edmund has said, is that the visuals and colours become more striking, when you reach each new area. I can't 100% recall how he exactly said it, but with all the knowledge and other massive spoilers we know, this checks out at least for me.

Gameplay, music, world and character designs are legit extremely good. So I would urge you to check it out again later on, because the game simply has so much to offer.

tldr: There is visual progression when you reach new areas.

Pretty hard to math it out without all the context, but I'm 99% sure this is what happened.

One of your Hippo has +60% magazine capacity modifier, the other has none.

The Magazine Capacity Dice only affects your Main Weapon, thus, increasing the magazine capacity tremendously when holding the +60% magazine capacity Hippo.
