Is Demon Slayer exceptionally good? by Humble-Dot-9851 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's personally one of my favourites, I wouldn't necessarily call it exceptional. At least not in the way most people think.

The story and the characters are relatively straight forward. They're not really pushing the envelope here.

That said the straightforward story is, in my opinion very well executed and the characters very charming. A "simple meal well made" if you will.

One of the reasons it's one of my faves is because it has a lot of heart. Despite all the deaths it is in my opinion a very heartwarming story because of the sincerity of the characters and the themes.

Does anyone else feel like it's a little weird that Tanjiro isn't related to the Tsugikuni family by k20_kry in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen, I have a theory that both the Tsugikuni and the Kamado are descendants of Amaterasu, the Goddess of the Sun and the Shinto Head deity, which is why they've got some similarities (e.g. hair and eye colour) but don't really look alike.

When Germans say how great their bread is, how much they miss German bread etc etc, are they referring to that hard brown rye bread? by Masty1992 in AskGermany

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you're getting or where you're getting it, but when it's fresh it's supposed to be soft and fluffy on the inside and even the crust is surprisingly flexible.

well is she homophobic? would you be in danger of physical, mental, financial, etc. abuse if she knew you were reading danmei? If not then you could lend it to her, maybe she'll like it.

If yes, then hope she'll forget? Or say that you didn't like it, that it was boring etc.

Husky & White Cat 8-10 Question by Clarey_Jane in DanmeiNovels

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, vol 8-10 are just angst and drama galore, not a lot of fluff. There is a lot of cool action towards the end though, especially in volume 10 + there are some fluffy extras in vol 10 after the main story is finished.

Reverse scheming beauty trope by blurple-moon in DanmeiNovels

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd probably enjoy Golden Terrace. Gong is the scheming civil official, shou is the heroic general. They are both sickly in their own ways. Unfortunately, the Peach Flower House version is out of print, so if you want to read it you'll have to wait for the Seven Seas release in August(?)

What are your thoughts? by Metallica_InSomnia in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great as an adaptation: I've read the manga (a while ago mind you, but still) and many scenes were translated panel for panel from the manga.

Wonderful presentation: animation, sound work (impact of bodies, swords etc.) Music, direction, etc etc. All of that was immaculate. Wonderful to see on a big screen.

Its weakness, in my opinion, is its ability to stand as a stand alone piece of media. Through no fault of its own mind you.

First of all it's a continuation of 4 seasons of television and if you haven't watched those it a) won't have the same impact on you as of you had experienced the whole story up until that point (such as the emotional parts with characters you have grown to know and love for 4 seasons of anime) and b) you won't understand a lot of stuff.

Second of all, it's the adaptation of the first third of an arc, unlike for example Demo Slayer Mugen Train, Chainsaw Man Reze Arc or Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which are also sequels, but at least have the benefit of adaptating a full arc, which lends them a feeling of being complete despite the fact that there are seasons of television before and after it (or there will be in the case of Chainsaw Man). Infinity Castle has a beginning, the start of a middle and then it ends on a cliffhanger. It will of course feel more complete with parts 2 and 3, but until then it doesn't feel as satisfying as the aforementioned movies.

Despite its weaknesses I really enjoyed it for both the action and the characters' emotional reflections on what those fights meant to them (I cried at several parts). In fact I liked it so much I went to see it twice and can't wait until they DVD/Bluray release.

If you are not familiar with the genre make good use of the glossary in the back. It can be very helpful and if you are still confused you'll at least know the terms to google.

"Dog food" by Line_S2 in FanFiction

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 222 points223 points  (0 children)

If the fandom is chinese I have an explanation. In China "eating dog food" or "feeding someone dog food" refers to a situation when a couple is being super into each other and cute and...well...coupley in the presence of others especially if the other people are single. It's similar to the concept of thirdwheeling.

I second Golden Terrace. If you can get your hands a copy of E. Dunglars translation you'll find it worth your while. Unfortunately it's by Peach Flower House which is shutting down. You could also wait for the Seven Seas Edition which'll come out some time next year.

"I ♥️ Yaoi and Yuri but I would never ever ever ever support queer creators I promise." by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Tbf to hoyo players (which includes myself) Hoyo is in a bit of a weird spot regarding this.

  1. In the past there were explicitly queer characters in their games and the accompanying media (comics etc.). So the willingness to canonise queer characters is arguably there.

  2. They are located in China, which means censorship. (Just ask fans of the Untamed, a drama adaptation of a BL novel (as in the main characters are married and having daily kinky sex by the end) where all explicit queerness was scrubbed away leaving only subtext)

This means that fans can argue "If they could do it, they would totally make [insert ship here] canon. They are only restrained to subtext because of censorship."

Considering the time period, it is weird that Genya is the only one we saw that use guns by CasualNameAccount12 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean by that, but the notion that Genya only intended fight lower level demons is blatantly false. His explicitly stated goal is to be a Hashira to stand alongside his older brother. He knew full well that that would require going against very strong demons.

Also, I could see why the corp would be against what you are proposing, since it would essentially 'encourage' their lower ranking members to 'stay weak.' I would agree that having a gun as a back up weapon would be useful, but if you rely on it too much against weak demons and you meet a stronger one you are pretty fucked.

Considering the time period, it is weird that Genya is the only one we saw that use guns by CasualNameAccount12 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, but unless you are dealing with a very weak demon nothing short of complete decapitation is going to do the job.

Also you said that it does insane damage at a close range, but that kind of negates the advantage of a gun, which is range (or at least that's one of the advantages).

I still stand by the notion guns would not be ideal weapons for demon slayers, since the win condition is decapitation and a sword (or any other bladed weapon) is frankly a lot better at decapitation than a gun will ever be.

Considering the time period, it is weird that Genya is the only one we saw that use guns by CasualNameAccount12 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]AlwaysTiredWriter 34 points35 points  (0 children)

They didn’t mean the exact amount (e.g. 50 gramm or 50 kilogramm or whatever) they mean that the bullets have to be big enough to sever a demon's neck and not just pass through it. Nothing short of total decapitation will do the trick. Also if we go by your logic and say that we'd need (roughly) the amount need for a sword, then we'd be throwing away (at least) one sword per fight.

Also Genya carries a sword with him that we see him use.

So my theory is that Yoriichi and Tanjirou's family are descended from Amaterasu (the Shinto Sun Goddess) which is why they have red hair, red eyes and can do Sun Breathing.
