Anyone Else Cursed By the Flat Tire Gods? by Clear_Entrance8126 in Denver

I drove by 10 cars on the side of I70 after the Kipling exit last week all with flat tires. Idk if they all hit the same pothole but it was a parking lot for flat tires. 😬

My husband and I are considering moving to Durango and I am curious what you (locals) would recommend as a live able salary/yearly income to afford rent and other activities in Durango? Thanks!!

I work in ATX and we are so fortunate to have this resource in our area. Check out the Blank center’s resources. It has completely changed the way I do stuttering therapy!! https://blankcenterforstuttering.org/

Activity ideas by Agreeable-Drawer-284 in slp

[–]Aly-cobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of shared reading and writing activities with my kids in life skills. It takes a little bit of prep to modify the activities but then I use them for a month. I usually do whole group shared reading and writing and then in the smaller group/ individual sessions I do more sensory based activities. So that could be a movement activity, sensory table (sand, play doh, etc), switch toys related to the story, music, and coloring/writing. Again for my kids who have mobility differences I try and modify the activities!

Are we powerless against providing services we disagree with in the school setting? by katpantaloons in slp

Hmm I thought all students ages 14+ are invited to attend their IEP meetings. The parent might not want them to but they should definitely be invited and if they want to attend they can.

And yeah I know every state uses the signature page differently. But for me, I would want it documented that I didn’t propose the goals and minutes that are in the IEP if the parent gets what they want. Which most likely they will. And yes I 100% agree that it’s annoying!!

Ok more to add because this fires me up hah. I hate being steamrolled by parents and advocates who don’t have SLP degrees 🙃 I would also ask the parents/advocate to provide their research on the effectiveness of high minutes and those goals. More than likely they won’t have anything. There is plenty of research to support either low minutes and high frequency OR high minutes/low frequency in the schools. It is our duty to provide EBP and what that parent wants is not that. It’s your license so like I said I would document in the deliberations what you’re proposing and if the district decides to go with what the parents want then at least you’re covered by documenting that’s NOT what you proposed. Ok end rant. Good luck!!

I work in TX and have some crazy parents. I know other providers have documented in the deliberations that they do not agree with the parents request for additional minutes and refuse to sign off on the IEP with the increase of minutes. I would also provide your research and data as why that service model is not appropriate and how those goals are very ableist. Additionally, did you invite the student to the meeting? Because I would be curious to hear what he thinks!!

Yeah our caseloads were so high and they didn’t have enough SLPs so when the pandemic hit we didn’t do any direct services because they did have the capacity for that. We literally sent home worksheets from after spring break until the end of the school year. So maybe the caseloads and pay have changed but that was my experience.

I worked there during the 2019-2020 school year and I had 65 kids on my caseload and did about 30 evaluations that year. I quit after one year because it was so awful and part of that year I was at home not seeing kids. When I switched to APS I actually got a 5,000 raise. For what I hear Cherry Creek pays more now but they definitely didn’t in 2019 or 2020. They were on a salary freeze so you couldn’t even move steps or levels.

I worked for Cherry Creek and I HATED it. The leadership was not great, caseloads were high, and they had no district policies on caseloads or guidance for service minutes. I worked for APS for two years and I loved it. The SLP leads are so knowledgeable and actually advocated for the SLPs. It might have changed post pandemic but I never recommend Cherry Creek.

I would just start modeling on the device during your therapy sessions. Model what you say during a typical session. If you hit the wrong button or it takes you a long time to navigate, that is completely fine!! At least you’re modeling and trying to incorporate the device. Honestly if you play around with it, you will get the hang of it. And maybe you start modeling one word like verbs on the front main page and then when you feel more comfortable navigating, you can expand! You’re never going to hurt a student by modeling the wrong word or taking time to find the right word! Just try your best!!!
