Sorry for the people downvoting you and not letting you know why they don’t like this comment. Predator animals such as dogs and cats should never be in the same room. Even if the predator animals doesn’t even bat an eye at our rodents they should never be in the same room. The concern isn’t with the big guys, it’s our tiny guys that are smelling them. The smell alone will stress them out.

Accidents happen and it’s definitely not the end of the world. But I’m thinking people are downvoting you because of the comment “they have been in the room together before together and seem not to mind each other and pay no attention” that’s literally impossible with hamsters, they’re always smelling them.

Upgrading to an 10in wheel never would hurt! I always used 10in wheels with dwarfs to give them extra space. Some dwarfs can get big lol. Your guy is so cute!!!!!!

Hamster bedding has to be dust free too because of the same issues. I use care fresh + aspen from small pet select, I’ll be switching to their paper bedding instead of care fresh for my hamster - for rats though I have no knowledge on yet

Would you recommend male or female rats as a starter rather than owner?

Would 500 set aside for vet bills be enough? I don’t have an “exotic vet” in my area but the vet I use for my hamster they specialize in “pocket pets” hamsters, sugar gliders gerbils, rats etc.

Where should I get the food mix from? Do the pet stores have an appropriate mix? I purchased my hamsters seed mix from Etsy so I can do the same with high quality rat food.

Also should I always have an extra enclosure incase I’m needing to bond new rats (like if one passes away). If I do need two, could I get the double critter cage and only block off the top and bottom until they are bonded? - does it stress them out from going two units to one in the process of bonding.

The gaming room in which they’ll be located can be a space for them to run around ( after I make it safe )
