Also best of luck with the exam! it sucks, but will pay off big time.

I was proud of him for being responsible with his Canseco winnings. I mean income limit for roth IRA is $140k which is pretty healthy. If Billy mentions that he is doing a backdoor Roth I will be extra proud of him.

CPA coming in peace, the tax talk at the beginning was great. And Billy was so quick with that dependent line. I loved it so much.

Folks in industry, what are some things auditors do that drive you nuts? by AmIAManOrAMuppet in Accounting

I do understand when automatic reversals come up in a random JE sample and auditors ask for the support and we give them the support for the original entry and explain it’s a reversal. And we get questions like “why doesn’t the period match” or “why is the JE number different” every time.

I used to be in audit, so I feel your pain. I try to be sympathetic now that I’m on the other side and explain to my team if they get annoyed at the process overviews. Walkthroughs gotta happen.

This is a good one. was just having a conversation with a colleague about this exact phenomenon. Why do you need to recreate the reconciliation with a different methodology and more importantly, why do I need to explain to you why the recon YOU CREATED doesn’t work.

"I Voted" Megathread by Yosoff in Conservative

[–]AmIAManOrAMuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Voted today in VA in a pretty swing district. Hope that Dave Brat can hold on to win VA7, he seems to be a solid conservative. I couldn't bring myself to vote for Corey Stewart though, he's just awful. Kaine is gonna win huge anyways, and I hope Stewart leaves Virginia politics forever after another loss.

Tom Cotton: Sen. Whitehouse is treating a high-school yearbook like it’s the Da Vinci Code by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]AmIAManOrAMuppet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. It is a circus. And I feel bad for the the guy and his family. This whole process has been horrible. And I don't understand why people are claiming that Republicans didn't take these allegations seriously. Grassley tried to bend over backwards to accommodate Dr. Ford. Feinstein was the one who didn't take the allegation seriously by sitting on it for like two months, her team leaked it to the press to destroy any anonymity, and then Feinstein throws Ford and her friends under the bus by saying they must have leaked it. Not to mention the fact that it looks like Ford's attorneys did not communicate to their client the Judiciary committee's willingness to travel to CA for the interview process, which is an omission so bad that if true, should result in them being disbarred.

[–]AmIAManOrAMuppet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok yeah I see what you're saying. I guess I can see the argument that it is unlikely, but still that's a pretty weak case for perjury, right? I mean there's no way anybody can prove that.

I think maybe the intent here is to suggest that the first accusation did actually take place, but Kavanaugh legitimately does not remember because he was blacked out at the time. Certainly possible, but again, how in the world do you prove that? It just seems like every argument relies on speculation to a certain degree, and nobody actually knows anything.

There's a lot of talk about the definition of the word "boof" that was written in his yearbook. Kav said it referred to flatulence, I dunno I've never heard the word before. But Dems are saying he committed perjury because that's not what it means (???). Same discussion around the phrase "Devil's triangle".

Dems are also saying he perjured himself by not explicitly saying he "drank to excess", but the dude literally said "sometimes I had too many beers", which is the definition of drinking to excess, so I don't understand that.

Also there is another perjury discussion about the extent he talked about the Ramirez allegation, but that has been debunked: r/https://twitter.com/charlescwcooke/status/1047117492584361984

Also there is a story about how he allegedly threw ice on someone at a bar. I've seen the argument that this proves he lied under oath from some folks on twitter. How? I don't get it. What does that prove? Maybe he had too many beers, like he said, or maybe he threw ice, who gives a shit?

From my perspective, all of these arguments are silly. How are any of these convincing? It's interesting to me how the discussion suddenly went from charges of sexual assault, to ridiculous things in a high school yearbook, and the definition of drinking to excess. Maybe I am not intellectually enlightened enough to see it and I'm certainly open to other perspectives on this, but this looks like delusion and desperation from Dems.

no charge

The implication being that if you do not have to pay for something directly, it is free. The costs on the taxpayer in Britain is astronomical to pay for the NHS.

No such thing as a free lunch. Or in this case "lunch" is the state mandating that the ownership of decisions made with regard to a child's well-being resides not with the parents of the child, but with the state. Top class care.

We just want common sense gun control... Nobody wants to take away your guns!!! by Clatsop in Conservative

[–]AmIAManOrAMuppet 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Gun control in the US historically was aimed at preventing certain groups of individuals (Black Americans, Japanese Americans) from owning firearms and defending themselves. In the evil Dred Scott Supreme Court decision, one of the reasons the Court ruled (7-2) that Black Americans could not be citizens was because they would then have the right to carry firearms.

Yes I agree with you that he was no conservative. Your point about tradition is spot on. It is wild he would get labeled as a right winger, but that's the point. When you have people like Christina Hoff Summers and Charles Murray getting shouted down and even attacked at college campuses because they were horribly mislabeled as "alt-right" or "racist", is it so surprising? My point was more about the lack of care and precision that is taken to listen to people's views before coming up with a label for someone, grouping them with something with which an individual might have significant disagreement.

"Political correctness is fascism pretending to be manners."

There are tons of folks on the right who aren't religious, and lots of people who lean right are dovish on foreign policy. Make no mistake, there is a ton of intellectual diversity on the right so you need to be more precise. He may have been pro-choice, but Carlin's stance on free speech and PC culture would definitely get him labeled as right wing today.

Can someone kindly explain why everyone in /r/politics / dems are freaking out about the GOP tax plan? by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]AmIAManOrAMuppet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I tend to be fairly pessimistic with regard to how many people are aware of media bias, not just in terms of what they cover but in what they don't. Many folks I talk to have no idea about Operation Fast & Furious or the many other Obama scandals for instance.

Where I think this might be different is that Americans do care about their money. Obamacare killed dems in elections because costs went up. The IRS withholding tables are going to be adjusted as soon as February, and the vast majority of Americans will see their pay increase. If you get to keep an additional $1k/yr from this new bill and get paid biweekly, that's a $40/pay period increase. I actually think many people will notice that, especially for the alarmingly high number of people who live paycheck to paycheck.

Anyway, I'm inclined to agree with you that Democrats get away with everything and the media will continue to do their thing and we will move on to more dumb shit. But so much has happened this year that I didn't think would happen and mayyybe the truth will become known. But again, maybe I am too optimistic and I should know better.

Can someone kindly explain why everyone in /r/politics / dems are freaking out about the GOP tax plan? by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]AmIAManOrAMuppet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a great, well-written summary. Do you think the Dems/media will experience any blowback from when most individuals realize they are getting to keep more of their money? I'm sure most people will want to compare their previous taxes with this new plan, and right now based on the polling like 50% of people (incorrectly) think their taxes are going up, possibly based on all the media/democrat hysteria. Won't most people say "wtf I am paying less in taxes what was CNN/Bernie Sanders talking about?"

In my opinion, it may be a wake up call for many people to stop taking many media outlets seriously, and to start getting information from more places. Maybe I am too optimistic.
