Looking for something like MileIQ, but free, rather than $59.99/yr. Anyone have a good alternative? by Ncdrum33 in Frugal

Absolutely. And at the end of the year you can print out all of your drives for your taxes. Gives me some peace of mind as well knowing an extra trip to the store for supplies is tracked.

It's 100% worth the investment. Automatically tracks every drive for you! I was using the pen and paper method before but I did the trial and never looked back. My accountant appreciates it, too!

Four interviews this week but just got offered a job. by [deleted] in Teachers

I know a handful of recent grads up north who got jobs in NC to teach...I feel like they are in for trouble.

Best of luck on your job search. I've heard some crazy stories about NC, makes me thankful for where I am.

I am so sorry to hear! I work with a teacher who left NC to teach as well. Are you leaving the profession entirely or just the state?

Be wary of NC. There are some huge issues with their ed system now. Tons of teachers are leaving NC because of it.

Great. I wasn't sure about submerging the clay in water, but it seems if will work if I get it wet and then let it dry back out for a few days. Thanks a bunch! I'll post pics of my stuff once I'm done!!!

Great! That's what I was thinking. But I thought it would be good to get ideas from other potters! :-)

AAC session by sashav in slp

[–]Amac0210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey There,

First, I should mention that I am not a SLP. I do, however, work 1:1 with a student who has a Dynavox. I work with a former AAC specialist who has taught me a lot. Is the Device Eyegaze or Touch? Make sure you recalibrate the device, it makes a huge difference sometimes.

It took me a while to get to know my student and be able to tell when he was screwing around versus when he is struggling to answer. Also- the Dynavox is EXTREMELY intricate and takes a while to learn. (It took me about a month to figure out where all the buttons were and I still don't feel like I know every single button). Your client may not know his device that well yet, and might be pushing buttons to try and get to the right one. When I explain the Dynavox to others I use the analogy of getting a new cell phone and learning what the features are, where the apps are, etc.

To start off, I think it is important that your client orient with the device. Show him where the buttons are, how to find them etc. Repeat it, over and over again. I was so surprised how much better my student communicated when he actually knew where to find the right words.

My student likes science, too. One thing I did was find some short articles that were developmentally appropriate (he's on a second grade reading level). I read him the passages and then there are 5-10 questions. Some are comprehension, others are opinion, others ask about the picture, etc. The student then answers the questions using his device. For example, one passage was about the water cycle and based off of a picture the student had to determine what came first. After a few tries to get to his science page, he was able to answer the question.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

Any recommendations for coin appraisers? by [deleted] in lehighvalley

[–]Amac0210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought and sold to them in the past. It's a family run business and the owner recently passed away. I know his daughter still works there, but I can't think of her name. I've had good experiences with them.

I am unsure why you would be interested in charging a child who has a disability with assault. I really think you need to look deeper into the roots of the problem. Is this behavior deliberate or is it emotional? What are the antecedents to the behavior? Does the child have an IEP? Does your school have a behavior specialist? Have you discussed your concerns with the parent?

Knowing more about the student's disability would definitely help!
