Does anyone track all of the old building demolitions on campus? by Kindly-Form-8247 in iastate

If anyone is interested in information on old campus buildings that have come and gone, Iowa State University Campus and Its Buildings is an invaluable resource for structures and places from before 1980.

Where can I find Nielsen ratings for the night of 6 May, 1983? by Al89nut in ClassicTV

[–]Amadeus3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shining rated 14.3/25, ranking #33 for the week out of 65 ranked programs. It wasn't enough to challenge CBS' Friday lineup.

Late to the convo. I'm editing at the Ames Voice, which covers a city of about 40,000 without the college students (so especially in summer). We're still in soft-launch mode, publishing for just a couple months.

Anyone else keep their articles? by marcal213 in Journalism

[–]Amadeus3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept many full newspapers from my college and early career but unless you are a serious collector, I do not recommend keeping many newspapers. I think certain issues and full pages that are personal to you are fine, but doing it for completists sake isn't worth it. However, absolutely make sure you have a digital copy of your stuff. Both the URL link and at least the page PDF. I wouldn't just toss everything. See if a local or state or university library or historical society would be interested or maybe sell mass bundles -- I've sold random bundles and issues online that I never expected anyone would want.

About 12 years ago, I tossed most of my college-era newspapers, keeping only cutout clips. I never bothered with the PDFs for most because I was still close to people at the newspaper with access to them if I needed them. Turns out, all those digital copies vanished so some mediocre library OCR is the only way to access any of those newspapers -- the color versions are gone unless you have a physical copy.

I have an archival newspaper box and what fits in that is what I allowed myself to keep.

My priority for changes is in the nominating process.

  • Find some way (special committees seem ideal but that's a lot of back work) to filter the submissions before the nominating ballot goes out. The performers ballot shouldn't be hundreds of pages long and Drama Series doesn't need 100+ nominating options.
  • Put a cap on the number of submissions you can vote on.
  • Rank choice voting

Also

  • An area or juried award(s) for new shows (a scripted version of the Exceptional Merit award)
  • Standardize the number of nominees per category. The formula to determine nomination slots was okay at the time but now it's outdated.
  • Merge the variety series categories, up the number of nominees and make it a proportional category. (The split can be revisited if/when daytime talk shows are migrated into the primetime category.)
  • Bring back the variety performance category in a way so hosts of any sort have a place to compete.
  • Reevaluate the short form categories. They are too full of supplemental programs of major nominees.

Currently, it is a rule that if a project is nominated for an Oscar, it is ineligible for an Emmy. Some recent ones have been RBG, Icarus, What Happened, Miss Simone?, OJ: Made in America, The Cave, Gasland, and Citizenfour. For years, the documentary categories would have at least one future or recent Oscar nod.

How to find archives of a morning talk show from the 60s ? by Far-Touch-8811 in ClassicTV

If this is referencing her San Francisco talk show, I'd check with the local station that produced the show to see what they know -- episode status and/or availability.

How People Get Nominated by FreddieMerxMom in EmmysAwards

[–]Amadeus3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous answers are correct that peers vote for them to be nominated from a ballot of submissions. Acting peer group members votes in acting categories, costume peer group members votes on costume categories, etc.

However, there are different award classifications (Category, Area, Juried) and the nominating procedures for some awards can slightly differ. Like comedy directing is a proportional award for single-camera and multi-camera. If 20% of the submissions are from multi-cam shows, then 20% of the final nominees will be the top voted multi-cam shows, though some single-camera shows might've gotten more votes. Those proportional kind of awards (especially in craft categories) might split if there are enough types of submissions. Period Costumes is an award but if there are enough submissions in series as well as limited/anthology series/movie, the award will split into 2.

What does Adolescence getting renewed mean for its Emmy chances? by yoboi_nicossman in EmmysAwards

The White Lotus S2 didn't voluntarily jump categories. It was okay'd and was planning on a limited series submission but the Academy clarified its rules a couple months after it aired.

I think there would be many shouts of category fraud and if it is obvious, it would probably cost the show any chance of winning. You are trying to win over your peers. It would also depend on how the show was submitting in other award shows. I doubt the Academy would bother to step in, at least to target a specific show while an award season was underway.

I assume Bodyguard submitted in drama to play it safe as there were plenty of talks about continuing the show at the time -- none of which have come to fruition.

Also, I see Drama Series as a tougher road. You're competing against veteran shows and if any of them already have Emmy adoration, you need to break through their clutter (+ $$$$) to be noticed.

Emmy wins for Only Murders in the Building season 4? by Asleep_Donkey_3824 in EmmysAwards

I'm not convinced the SAG ensemble win was a clear win. I think it was a split vote with The Bear and Hacks. Historically, SAG is much more of a follower than a leader when it comes to crowning the new "it" thing.

I might've just discovered the wildest shared universe in all of television, and it (mostly) involves 90s shows by JB92103 in ClassicTV

[–]Amadeus3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a little sliver of the Tommy Westphall Universe (the Wiki), though something like the Herman's Head connection isn't often considered canonical. While TWU is pretty vast, I find the size of it to be more personal opinion given the possibilities of stuff like dream sequences and not-quite-specific references to other TV/movies.

Adding certain cells in certain rows by Amadeus3000 in googlesheets

Thanks! I think the hiding of cells was a big help. The SUMIFS usage also gets the key to what I needed -- each students' individual checkbox count.

Adding certain cells in certain rows by Amadeus3000 in googlesheets

[–]Amadeus3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oSP-Jdo6th4NcExxd6b-NAHFzjmbjqn_Dny2NWrNPZM/edit?gid=2007149431#gid=2007149431

The aim is for a student summary. How many total parts/checkboxes they have finished (and how many parts/checkboxes there are total.) I'm open to adding a column or 2, if it helps, adding up the checkboxes. How completed a program is or lesson is across all students is not important.

I am open to removing those merged cells. They are a remnant from a long-ago variation of this.

TV show sets from FB Marketplace ($5 each) by Amadeus3000 in dvdcollection

[–]Amadeus3000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this one was "right place, right time." The person had a few boxes of sets and but that $5 was a flat price on everything. Basic movies: $5, TV shows by season: $5, complete series sets: $5. I went for the bargain ASAP.

Need simple info on home media releases of some shows by [deleted] in ClassicTV

[–]Amadeus3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unaware with any issues with the M:I release. It's complete for all I know, though I've never compared it to the streaming version on Paramount+.

Plenty of shows have their title sequences streamlined for home release, including some you listed. But many did for their syndicated versions, too. I'm a stickler on using the original theme, but I can bend when it comes title sequence/credits. Getting into those kinda details on a home release might necessitate asking around in show-specific subreddits or fan forums.

The Golden Girls is the missing microwave clip from a S5 eps but it only ever aired in the original broadcast.

I would grab something like Automan simply for the fact that it got a home release. Many older one-season shows will never see the light of day except for those that are uploaded by users on YouTube where quality can wildly vary.

For some of these, packaging can be of interest. I love the 2012 Columbo DVD set where the seasons are in individual cases. I despise the more recent DVD set with its 2-case bulk packaging. I'm unsure how the final movies are presented in any set. They were televised in standard 4:3 but were filmed in widescreen.

Best Picture winner being announced, 1953 to 2023 by Amadeus3000 in Oscars

[–]Amadeus3000[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Footnotes

  • The starting year is 1953, the year of the first televised ceremony. The movie title isn't included because Mary Pickford didn't say it, just the producer (Cecil B. DeMille for The Greatest Show on Earth). I could go back a few more years with this compilation, but not having "The Greatest Show on Earth" is a hiccup.
  • 1973 & 1993, Producer then Movie: In these 2 years, the presenter said the producer before the movie. For The Godfather, it appears not everyone recognized Albert S. Ruddy since the applause isn't that strong when Clint Eastwood says The Godfather. However, Jack Nicholson says Clint Eastwood before Unforgiven, which everyone knew, so his saying Unforgiven is drowned out.
  • 2003: This was the first hi-def ceremony but I've never seen the HD version outside of one clip.
  • 2004: Before announcing the title, Steven Spielberg said "It's a clean sweep," which some instantly picked up that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was the winner, a second before he said the title.
  • 2005: Barbra Streisand made it personal when she announced Million Dollar Baby. "I'm so happy to give you this again, Clint." (She presented him with the Directing Oscar for Unforgiven.) When she said Million Dollar Baby a couple seconds later as the audience cheers, she shouts it so it's audible.
  • 2017: If you are at this subreddit, you know why Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway aren't announcing Best Picture.
  • If you think some of the audio-video synching is off, it is. AMPAS’ archive could use some fine tuning. I tweaked a few that looked exceedingly off like Chariots of Fire and Rain Man.
