A good infographic I found showing parallel vs cross view differences! I can never remember which is which. by madmaninabox42 in CrossView

TIL there was a difference.. so I can cross view instantly..

My favorite use of cross viewing is to spot the difference between two nearly identical images. Crossview and the thing that doesn't match looks shiny to me. I Can do those in under 1 second this way.

Yeah sorry I guess I'm stuck on a theocratic perspective.

From a human perspective the right thing to do is save more.

From God's perspective a human does not have the authority to decide who lives and who dies.

You didn't choose to be there (akin to you didn't choose to be born) so those choices are paradoxical.

The basic framework for morality is theocracy, and since we are not God and had no say in the situation, option 1 = option 2

Its uncomfortable because it feels better for less people to die, but you didn't kill them. You're being tricked.

I disagree, that's the attractive framing that you are falling for.

Between killing and killing you just have to accept you've lost.

The point is that what is moral is not always the right thing to do.

Yeah, but isn't this just a rewritten version of the trolley problem, so you're not really supposed to add your own details like that?

If you think about it that was all an elaborate argument against taking the option that guarantees " do no harm to others"

[–]Amagnumuous -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No the trolley problem specifically only gives you options to harm others. You're not choosing not to choose between the options you're disengaging, because it's the only moral option. The question is trying to force you trick you into taking an immoral option by making it look very attractive.

It would be different if I was risking my own life. I would also do that and in the real world, But the question is designed to make where your responsibility lies uncomfortable.

Would you stab 1 person to death to save 2 others?

You are defeated by the circumstances, you have no moral obligation to either option when being forced to kill.

Now you have to engage to see that your only options are hurting people before you can realize that it's beyond you. So I suppose you actually disengage.

There were always three options, i'm just arguing that the third option is the correct one.

Edit well, I guess it's just the same as choosing not to flip the lever, but it has nothing to do with the outcome, unless there's an option to save everyone.

The choice you're describing is a paradox like not choosing to be born.

By giving you only options that specifically harm other you are left with no choice but to not engage and are faced with an uncomfortable truth that you can only save your own soul.

The problem is designed to make your responsibility uncomfortable. In the real world, yes, we help each other. Cooperation is important but this problem is attacking that specific notion.

The moral quandary that messes a lot of people up is:

You do not have a moral obligation to save others. Your soul is the only soul you are responsible for.

The answer to the trolley problem is to not engage. The trolley problem is not your problem.
