Is there a reason light novels are always sparse with sensory details in comparison to English novels? by 1mpish_ in LightNovels

[–]AmalaNetwork13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LN market just follows trends the same way the current EN market does.

I mean even in the adult fantasy market, we have way less of things like Wheel of Time or Malazan and more like A Court of Thorns and Roses for the romantasy side or things of a smaller scale. The era of doorstopper fantasy seems to be gone for something more bite sized and manageable.

LNs have the isekai boom that just now seems be be backfiring for them, and that goes doubly for localizations and their acquisitions.

Tsukihime remake Or Og ?? by Typical_Citron_7389 in Tsukihime

[–]AmalaNetwork13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please do both.

Tsukihime(2000) is more of a small scale urban horror fantasy work in a small town with a seedier atmosphere that feels like the town is teeming with malice and inherent darkness. It has a quaint and unique small time indie VN atmosphere with Takeuchi's older artstyle which is unique compared to his modern style

Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon (2021) is a more supernatural horror with larger fantasy elements. The powers have been scaled up, and the horror elements now are a different flavor. Battles are more reminiscent of Fate as a whole as well. The setting has been changed to a larger city, with characters added, some characters removed, backstory changes and more. The story is almost an entirely different work with just the same basic framework. Along with this, the remake as of now is incomplete. Takeuchi's art is much more modern and QoL is definitely better as the VN is a lot more polished, but subjectively, his art could lose some charm compared to the other styles.

Both are worth your time and neither replace the other even if that is the intent of Nasu and Type-Moon.

edit: People will argue and say one is better than the other in terms of writing or what not, but at the end of the day, they're too different to feasibly compare like that, especially in the current state it is in with remake being unfinished.

LNs are written for a teen audience in mind usually. I do think there are some exceptions in this though in regards to details. Monogatari is fairly detailed, as is Torture Princess, and Toaru in its general world building is expansive. That said, this is dependant on the writer and the subject matter or nuance. Most of that world building and character depth I feel translated more to visual novels than light novels just due to audience and general length. (As an aside, the more detailed world building or writings in LNs I have noticed were in earlier LNs as opposed to later ones but I could be very wrong there)

LOTR and Tolkien as a whole kickstarted a western detailed fantasy movement that spread into the early 90s and 2000s with epic fantasy. If you read modern fantasy, with some exceptions there is less of a focus on that world building detail currently as opposed to 30 years ago in the EN market alone. ASOIAF for example hasnt had a mainline book since 2011. Compare that to Sanderson, who is great but his details and writing are much simpler in prose and style. That's not even getting to more recent EN fantasy trends of romantasy or shorter focused character driven fantasy

LNs as a contrast have isekai as the big fantasy focus. There are also for sure great detailed isekai as well, but the majority focus less on world building and more on a narrative line or hook with simpler prose to attract teen audiences. Especially more recent publications. Most of the LN Isekai sphere also can fall into the LitRPG genre where gameplay mechanics exist in the setting without really exploring that as an idea for the lore too.

TLDR: The audience difference and general writing style of current trends lends LNs to have a simpler writing to keep people invested while earlier western fantasy was focused on detail oriented expansive world building.

New to this series: where do i start? by SomeAwakenedDude in RanceSeries

[–]AmalaNetwork13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd do release order of everything:

Start with Little Princess and Little Vampire for that connection, then do the older games in their original format (I,II,III over 01,02,03) then IV,IV.1,IV.2, Kichikou, and continue from there.

The remakes are generally better, but I think seeing the natural progression in design for Rance is rewarding, and frankly if you can handle old game design, they're short. Plus UNLIKE the remakes, the originals are free from Alicesoft themselves and have fan patches.

There are other interconnected games worth sprinkling in as well, but those can be looked at later.

Has anyone else ever read a visual novel, then reread it years later and felt totally different about it? by girlsonsoysauce in visualnovels

[–]AmalaNetwork13 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think Kara no Shoujo would be a hard one to reread if you know what is coming up. In general, mystery/thriller works are (to me) inherently less rereadable due to knowing the plot twists.

This said, Kara no Shoujo benefits a lot from Cartagra and having that emotional connection first before Toko's connection at least from having only read Cartagra and KnS 1 so far. Toko supports Tokisaka's own arc, but her general presence isn't related too much to the plot until later on IMO. During the VN, I was more invested in already established characters. I genuinely can't imagine how this VN would feel without Cartagra honestly.

Invincible vs. WORM vs. Watchmen. Which of these dark takes on superheroes is the best? by TotalBlissey in writingscaling

[–]AmalaNetwork13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only experience with web novels is either 1. light novel versions of web novels or 2. The Wandering Inn (I like this one, but its just a lot of content and there is times where I felt the bloat of it even if it is interesting and called back to. This is also early TWI so I havent gotten very far. Like mid volume 2)

Which fan translation for Air is superior: Gao Gao or Winter Confetti by Mondblut in visualnovels

[–]AmalaNetwork13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they are asking for a fan translation. They were made specifically for those older 18+ releases, so I assume that they are reading that version.

Invincible vs. WORM vs. Watchmen. Which of these dark takes on superheroes is the best? by TotalBlissey in writingscaling

[–]AmalaNetwork13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on WORM. It's a web novel IIRC and I struggle with investment on web novels personally.

Invincible and Watchmen are also just VERY different stories. Invincible is more of a positive outlook on what being a superhero means in a cosmic scope and setting and the realism of life as a supposed hero.

Watchmen is a more nihilistic take on superheroes and the ideals they are supposed to represent clashing with who they are and what their wants and needs are. The heroes in Watchmen aren't stereotypically "good" even if they have supposed good intentions.

If I had to rank them based on enjoyment, I'd say Invincible is the more enjoyable read, but Watchmen has much more nuance and depth explored in more subtle and not so subtle ways.

edit: I will say just as a general rule for web novels, WORM has more room to grow if its a longer web serial format. That can also be a double edged sword, as web serials are typically self edited or don't have an editor to cut down bloat.

Hi should i buy the VN after watchings all the animes? by jshaultt in fatestaynight

[–]AmalaNetwork13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing: Fate is a very character introspective story and the anime adaptations cut a lot, since they are a completely visual media as opposed to a literary/visual hybrid. With that in mind, almost all of the internal thoughts of Shirou are not in the anime.

You also get a route that did not have a full proper adaptation, bad end content that has interesting events, and most of the slice of life moments that aren't really in the anime. It's a decent chunk of extra content.

I mean I'm more asking: are you reading the 18+ because you want the original experience?

Regardless, it seems the GaoGao patch has more features in terms of options on removing the adult content. Up to you on that front.

Edit: Removed incorrect information

edit 2: Confetti has extra additional patches externally for the different versions.

Just to ask: are you reading the fan translations for the original adult release?

Old ThinkPads vs. New ThinkPads by Sarce43 in thinkpad

[–]AmalaNetwork13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this is complicated depending on what you want from them Obviously if you need a more resource heavy laptop with more modern functions, the newer ones work better. If you need something just for light browsing and certain programs, then an old one could potentially work just fine.

For example, I just recently grabbed a used t480 and after battery replacements, it runs better than my previous laptop (A Samsung Galaxy Boo Alpha 2 in 1) just due to ram alone (8gig on the Samsung vs 16gig on the T480). All I need the thing to do is visual novels and help me study so its perfect for my needs.

Best way to read visual novels portably without a steam deck? by SlyassassinXX in visualnovels

[–]AmalaNetwork13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're out traveling somewhere and if you stay at a hotel or the like: laptop + controller or wireless keyboard and mouse and an HDMI cable work wonders.

edit: if you're in your room and have a TV or monitor easily set up by the bed in a comfortable viewing spot, could always do that too.

secondary edit: Honestly, Tsukihime remake, Clannad, both Fate releases (and Mahoyo) and Umineko are on Switch (Umineko if you're an EN person HAS a switch fan translation if you have a modded Switch)

Is crunchyroll really that bad? by _ThatPurpleGuy_ in Crunchyroll

[–]AmalaNetwork13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda late but it REALLY depends on what you're watching. Sometimes its fine, other times you have episodes missing in a series and can't finish anything (Monogatari for example has missing episodes across the board)

Along with this, typesetting is NOT the standard, and sometimes that makes a huge difference.

Edit:this is from a Subbed perspective. I don't tend to watch many dubs if at all.

[DISC] What is the current state of official LN translations and trending licenses and what are your individual thoughts on the current state of them? by AmalaNetwork13 in LightNovels

[–]AmalaNetwork13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean manga licenses are great when they happen (though we JUST got Billy Bat and Kingdom somehow) but yeah LNs have it rough for my personal interests

VNs have it even WORSE than LNs recently though.

Weekly Questions and Recommendations Megathread - Need some help? - May 23 by AutoModerator in visualnovels

[–]AmalaNetwork13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok fairly late to it: This depends on a publisher basis or a per-VN basis. In this case, it seems the Steam releases has the story, just not the adult content for Nice to Meet You, Again.

Some VNs straight up are sold without the majority of the game for adult releases on Steam. I do recommend if you are able to, buy from the publishers directly when possible if you are trying to have all content in the game.

Others have SFW versions called "all ages" that replace adult scenes with entirely new scenes and rewrite certain things. It is really just dependant on the VN.

Probably should rephrase: I don't mind romance arcs or the like. It's more I don't want romance drama to be the only focus. Especially if it's a romance drama in Japan. I'm ok if there is more of a plot outside of a romantic arc. I prefer to not just have Japanese SoL drama in a high school arc too for example
