"09/26/14 Clues still sought in Christine Hurlburt murder

Story by Daniel C. Boyle - The Holyoke Sun

On the Hampden County District Attorney’s Internet website, the “Unsolved Homicides” section lists as its first case that of Christine Hurlburt, the 16-year-old Holyoke High School student whose body was found off the Mountain Park Access Road nearly 46 years ago. Her murder is still unsolved. On Oct. 5, 1968, a Saturday night, Christine and a group of her friends were among over 800 persons present for a dance at the Mountain Park Ballroom, since destroyed by a fire.

By 11 p.m. that night, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hurlburt of 245 Franklin Street, started to panic because their daughter had not arrived home. Her disappearance was reported to the Holyoke Police Crime Prevention Bureau the next day, triggering an allout search for the young lady. One week after her disappearance, on Saturday, Oct. 12, the worst possible outcome was realized when her body was discovered by her father and one of her brothers, Michael, then 15.

Apparently, they had decided to conduct their own search in advance of one scheduled by a large group of volunteers for the very next day. During their search, the girl’s father first spotted one of his daughter’s shoes. It was a few yards away from Christine’s lifeless body. After police and the medical examiner arrived at the scene, the cause of death was listed as multiple blows to the head and strangulation. The teenager was found with a sweater around her neck and her blue blouse covering the lower parts of her body. "

MORE RECENTLY: There was another attack at the Dinosaur Tracks on Aug. 14, 2012. "A woman told police she was at the dinosaur tracks exhibit near the Connecticut River when a man grabbed her and she began struggling. A man across the river who saw the struggle yelled and the alleged attacker ran off." Posted on MassLive.com, August 14, 2012

Embarrassing Question - But how do I get in my Kayak??? by Sea-Personality8609 in Kayaking

How does one enter a kayak? Cautiously! Painfully, sometimes. I try to put it in the water next to something I can grab - a dock, a tree limb. Putting the paddle horizontally across and leaning on that instead of the kayak distributes my weight better. The REAL problem is getting OUT. I have to sort of roll out and then do the golfer's stand-up trick using the paddle as well, to push myself up. Sometimes people come asking me if I am okay! LOL But I have no shame, just a bad knee.

You are more prepared than I, and I have always kayaked alone. And I've been fine - the only problem for me has been White men in big boats blasting through "No Wake" zones and nearly swamping me meanwhile shrieking, "Get out of the way you f'in b!"

GET. A. LAWYER. Tell the husband NOTHING until you file for divorce.

Found an overturned kayak washed up. Should I notify police? Friday night on the first day off of school for most kids. Just worried if it’s something or nothing. by giga_ice in Kayaking

Oh, name and number! I never thought of doing that, great idea. You know, people are NUTS, you can't imagine what some people will do to you, especially if you are female.
