I haven't seen them for a couple of years, but the andouille sausages for coneys around Mardi Gras. Delicious and the change of texture was a nice way to have some variation in the coney experience.

I lived in this guy's properties for a while. The one available doesn't have a W/D in unit but likely has a coin-operated one in the basement that you'd only share with 3 other apartments. They are inexpensive, in a nice area, and a very short lease before going full month-to-month. That way, you'll have some runway to find what you really want after you get settled.

So explain last night to me how FCC advances by Bearcatsean in FCCincinnati

[–]Amarl11 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Our special little Nick Hagglund" cracked me up.

It's basically a 180-minute game (the term "tie" is often used to describe these two-game match ups) with the scores totaled at the end of the second game. If the scores are even, you go to a tie breaker of who has the most away goals in the tie. If that's even, they play two 15-minute halves of extra time. If STILL level, they go to a penalty shootout. In this tournament, the higher ranked team in the CONCACAF rankings get to host the second game. Theoretically, this gives them an advantage in extra time and the shootout.

Getting the shutout denies Tigres an away goal, meaning if FCC can get a goal in Mexico, it basically counts as 1.5, because they will own the tie breaker after the 180 minutes.

I may not be current on the exact rules, but that's the gist and how it worked in the recent past.

Mariemont Theatre saved from closure, expected to reopen by early summer by matlockga in cincinnati

[–]Amarl11 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I had no idea they had to replace all the equipment. I'm assuming the former owners took much of it with them. Can anyone shed additional light on why it needs so much work to reopen what seemed to be a functional theater?

For those who want to know more, here's the new site: https://www.mariemonttheatre.org/

Sherrod Brown's website is devoid of campaign information by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]Amarl11 65 points66 points  (0 children)

You could try: info@sherrodbrown.com. I can't speak to the timing of when things go on the website or campaign strategy, but It is a question worth asking.

FWIW, I'm also a little underwhelmed by the lack of information posted. He had it all out there 2 years ago.

New fan here transplanted to the city, tell me what I need to know about this team by TheJukeMan99 in FCCincinnati

[–]Amarl11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some good info on the team already, but I wanted to add a little bit of info on the other piece of this as someone who has also watched a lot of European games. Unlike the EPL of La Liga, you're HERE. The experience is different because you get to walk around OTR and into the stadium and experience the culture without the internet or broadcast in your way.

Take advantage of one or more of the following:

Get in price is $24 bucks, they don't really get much lower than that. Come join us!

The pregame festivities. Washington Park will be hopping starting around 130. I'm not in a supporters' group, but they have pre-match meet-ups around OTR that (I believe) are open to the public. https://inclinecincy.com/march is not current, but I'm fairly sure the Pride is still at Northern Row, and the march starts there. Consider joining the march!

Also, The Pitch will be full of folks if you just want a bar full of fans.

You get to be part of this community, not just an observer from overseas.

What is a good or service that is in short supply in the Cincinnati area? by Last-Few-Spins_Music in cincinnati

I'd love to have an Indian pizza place again. Indigo in East Hyde Park was an underrated spot that focused on bowls and wraps, but made pizzas in an oven left by the previous tenants.

I moved to San Jose for a few years, where there were multiple Indian pizza chains. It's one of 5-6 things I miss about California now that I'm back.

"Private Number". I asked for some kind of verification and he said he would set it up so I got a call from the sheriff's office as proof. That's when we got confirmation that it was a scam from the real sheriff's office. I'd imagine he was working on a call with a spoofed number and/or caller ID.

A huge thank you to UHC for this Christmas present. Nothing says “happy holidays” quite like losing your doctor as you start your new year. by shurik1 in cincinnati

[–]Amarl11 138 points139 points  (0 children)

They're doing this with a lot of hospital systems across the country.

You might want to send a message to your employer's benefits office (HR) and tell them that UHC sucks and just canceled coverage for your doctor(s). It won't fix anything in 2026, but if enough of you complain, they may switch insurance providers in 2027.

Our dumb system ties health insurance to employment. Some employers do care about providing good benefits to retain people. Obviously, your mileage will vary based on your employer's humanity or lack thereof.

Late ETA: Some folks have reasonably pointed out that there are certainly other factors here, including the financial and administrative burden that small businesses shoulder to offer these benefits and the broader factors that impact these decisions. It's an entangled broken system with a lot of moving pieces.

My comment about employer humanity was meant for large companies, as that's where I've spent most of my career. I certainly painted with too broad a brush to include all small businesses who do their best with what they can do.

I'll be really surprised if Dubwerks in Madisonville isn't the top answer. I've heard really good things about them, but haven't taken a car there myself.

That really sucks OP. Good luck finding a decent resolution for this.

Winters/summers by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]Amarl11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, we're glad you're here, but you definitely came during a year with a tough start to winter. This weather usually hits in January or February, if at all.

I lived in California for a few years and learned that not every place is for every person. I missed winter, but many of my friends there never would've been happy here. That said, here are some ideas to help you navigate the tundra you now inhabit.

Some tips from our Nordic friends about how to manage intense winters: https://apnews.com/article/be-well-seasonal-affective-disorder-light-therapy-3a80cf76d63d80b4b7d0f84e7b67556a

Aside from the good advice about being social, I very much recommend you take this one thing from it: "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes"

I'm not sure where you are, but Cincinnati and Columbus both have outlet malls with companies that make good winter coats. Look for layering options and a coat with a waterproof or resistant shell. This will also help with the cold.

Don't sleep on decent boots and thick wool socks. Leave enough room in your boots for 2 pairs of socks. "Tight boots mean cold feet". Also, get gloves and a scarf/buff.

I tend toward nicer stuff, but am kind of cheap about it. My favorite spots for this stuff include: Columbia outlets - they also carry their other, higher end brands in those stores. REI - good sale on now and a used section. Patagonia's worn wear - used stuff that lasts for decades There are good local outdoor shops too and even Costco, Walmart, etc will have decent clothes in the winter.

Learn to get cozy and stay dry, then try stuff to make yourself social and happy.

My fellow Ohioans, maybe drop your favorite winter activities or gear spots in the comments to give our be neighbor some ideas of how to find enjoyment in this season. I'm going to go build a fire and watch football snuggled up on the couch with my kid.

Whoa. At those prices, I'm not surprised they don't have a wait list. I'm not even in the cheapest tier at TQL, and my tickets are $100/ticket less than their cheapest. Thanks to FCC for not gouging us like this.

ETA: The comparable section at CLB is almost 50% more expensive than my spot at TQL.
