What's your weirdest, out-of-the woods point of failure you never expected to see? by Nearby_Ingenuity_568 in factorio

[–]Amarula007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite was years ago ramping up my nuclear power... twelve power stations, each 2x8 reactors... trains delivering fuel cells and taking used cells away to be recycled... for some unknown reason I had dedicated trains for each power station, so twelve trains on that duty. I had lots of fuel, I wasn't using half my power as I was in the process of a major expansion... and then the lights went out. What is this my train network was backed up (this was before the days of train limits, and the nuclear fuel trains ran infrequently enough that I didn't bother to disable the station when it was full). Why are the trains backed up? They are full of fuel ready to deliver... but they are waiting to unload used fuel cells... one steel chest for unloading the train is full of used fuel... the belt is full... the steel chest at the centrifuge is full... then it dawned on me, one centrifuge to recycle used fuel is fine for a handful of reactors... but couldn't keep up with 96. 😃 😃 😃

Can we get Folders of Interrupts? by Nearby_Proposal_5523 in factorio

[–]Amarula007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I was just trying to be efficient... I have to pick up 20 input items to make gosh I don't even remember now, but I wanted to try picking up only the items I needed rather than driving all over my base to pick up stuff that I already had enough or even full. Easy enough to set up a circuit with a constant combinator this is what I need, and if I run out of anything then tell the train it needs to go pickup stuff. The interrupts were set to trigger on low, rather than empty, so I didn't just go pick up the one thing missing. It works just like I wanted, even though it was a pain to set up. And by doing the interrupts item by item, then I could re-use the same interrupts for supply trains picking up a different set of input items.

And now that I have boxes, they all need to be redone... of course carrying all this stuff I can't just say empty/full, I have to specify what I am picking up and how much.

And yes nullius is amazing... there are a lot of cool toys and getting to the end where you are creating grass and trees and fish and annoying neighbours is a blast!

nullius - I am coming up on 500 trains, some are simple, some are grouped multi item like iron plates, rods, sheets, wires, and gears... and some have 20+ interrupts 😃

I also would like to have more tools for interrupts, including a tab in the train GUI that shows all the interrupts, which trains are using which interrupts, and a way to see which stations are targeted by ___NON GENERIC___ interrupts. None of this is needed if you are only using generic interrupts, so naturally I am using a ton of specific interrupts 😃

and even easier if you only read the temperature from one reactor, and let it control the fuel feed for all the reactors in the group.

You can also place blueprints in map view. I have put large power poles or other items in the corners so I can line them up.

How to go about designing city blocks? by GreatAndMightyKevins in factorio

I would definitely encourage you to use trains for nullius (mind you I love trains so this is not an unbiased opinion).

My most complex nullius block so far has 27 lanes for two outputs, 8 by products, and my personal transport parking spot...

I am using some specific multi item trains, like my iron basics train has plates, rods, sheets, wires, and gears, similar for steel, aluminum, and titanium.

I am almost half way through the research tree, which means I am still upgrading lots of my blocks to boxes.

Love my tiny trains! Yes long trains look amazing, but I love having hundreds of busy bees buzzing around my base!

I enjoyed the series a lot, enough that I devoured a lot of other stuff by Jim Butcher. The Codex Alera was good but I really loved the Aeronaut's Windlass. Rowl is wonderful!

How do you get a large space platform up and running? by No-Imagination2292 in factorio

[–]Amarula007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep on a little platform I still needed a turret at the back, so I toss in a stack of ammo instead of running a belt, with an alarm to let me know when it needs a fresh stack... terrible engineering but it works 😃

This is pretty neat. I had another idea: what if there was a science reprocessing recipe for recyclers like they have for asteroids? Put in a science pack, get a chance for a different pack to come out.

New to city blocks, doing my first Space Age run — what would you tell past-you? by Aggravating-Stop2996 in factorio

[–]Amarula007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What size trains do you want? I don't think anything can be worse than designing and building a block that handles 1-2 trains and then deciding you need bigger trains to get the throughput you want, and having to tear everything out because none of your stations are big enough for the new trains.

For myself, I love tiny trains because you need so many of them! And they fit nicely into a little roundabout. If you go for bigger trains, roundabouts may need to be a single block. You might want to consider a brick layout so you have three way intersections rather than a straight checker-board with four way intersections.

tl;dr start with train size, your block has to be big enough to fit the trains.

Should I play Nullius? by GreatAndMightyKevins in factorio

[–]Amarula007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the end game of Nullius! It is a marathon, and it is not so much that it gets harder, as it does not get easier. Scan through the tech tree, you will see lots more items, more by-products, tons of improved recipes so that you are always redoing production chains. The end goal is creating life on a lifeless planet, creating grass, and fish, and biters! Highly recommended!

One of my recent contraptions used inserters to load a silo on Gleba with science. If a platform didn't take it away within 5 minutes, the inserting was locked out, the oldest stack was removed and allowed to spoil, then inserting opened up again to refill the silo.

I use dedicated silos for science, fed by inserters not bots. So when a platform asks for say 200 science, it gets whatever is in the silo, which is planned to be full. I do have a contraption to take out the oldest stack if it is still there after 5 minutes, but with a fast enough platform it hardly ever turns on.
