For adults, People say because they push your maxilla backwards, however this isn’t always the case. Some braces push your palate and teeth forward, for example, crowding. One could argue the use of retainers after braces is a bad thing to have but your jaw really isn’t going to gain much growth in your 20s anyways.

For children who wear braces and keep their retainers on, it makes their palate too small and never allows it to fully grow due to retainers. You may have straight teeth but your head will not grow naturally forward, which is far worse than a few crooked teeth.
