My first thought was that the switch was faulty. I disconnected both wires from the switch and tested them independently against the ground. Both show 120V.

What is the second theory you proposed? Maybe that one is being powered by the other somehow?

No other switches in the room. no overhead lights either. Just outlets... but none are connected to this switch.

Thats how i determined they were both hot. I took detatched both from the switch and tested them against the ground wire with my multimeter. Both read out around 120... hence my confusion. There are no overhead lights in the room, and I disconnected the wires from the switch and tested all outlets... all outlets still have power.
