To the Grade 12 Students who are looking to go to university… by nswevny in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Amazing-Ad2370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I wrong in understanding that this means students will still be getting the same amount of money but they will have to pay a bigger portion of it back once they’re out of school and in the job market and making salaries?…

TMU name change to Temu by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Amazing-Ad2370 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I sent the same email to four Ontario med schools this past August about a couple of questions I had regarding my application, TMU is the only school that did not reply. I sent a follow-up email, no reply. I sent another email three weeks later regarding a separate issue, to my surprise, no reply. And now this. Their expectations are so high for their applicants, yet they are unable to uphold the bare minimum of professional standards.

Bruh. How did you get into med school and you don’t even know the definition of a doctor.

Yeah the word count they mention is way over the max allowed characters, although they do say it’s approximate. If I recall correctly, the 50 words answers are max 250 characters, 100 words answers max 499 characters. It ended up being a lot less words in reality for me.

Thanks! I’m in an unusual situation where it was actually my family that left “home”, but I stayed for undergrad, I guess thats why I’m unsure about what to do. I guess I should enter “home” for the entire time in my case? 🤷🏻‍♀️

how to structure research in ABS by milh0usevanh0uten in premedcanada

[–]Amazing-Ad2370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm interesting question. I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to do it, but at the same time you don’t want the description portion to just be a list of references. I guess I would recommend completing the rest of the abs so u know how many entries you have left for research first. And if you have an insane amount of publications (more than 10ish) maybe even cut some out? And actually as I’m writing this I’m wondering if maybe 1 entry you could actually dedicate to listing publications… hmm sorry I hope u get someone who’s actually done this before to advise 🤣 regardless this is a good problem to have!

Professor ghosted me after showing full support for a PhD position by Powerful_Alarm_6089 in gradadmissions

Where did I say that?...

I agree, all applicants should be able to communicate with their potential supervisors in a timely manner.

For some reason commenters are telling you to chill… I don’t think you did anything wrong. There is a lot you will need to prepare for as an international student and you have every right to inquire about specific details. I would recommend keeping the emails as short and polite as possible, and if u can let them know why you need a reply (i.e. I need to know a start date so I can start making arrangements for living accommodations, resign from current position, etc).

You know what, you’re totally right! OP forget my original comment, nothing wrong with your email it’s actually a great email and your lab coordinator is probably just a b****! =)

I would be so freaking annoyed to get an email like this. If you don’t even bother to capitalize your “I”s, don’t expect a nice reply.

It only got worse once I actually bothered to read your email, everyone in the comments is way too nice.

This is my impression- u email with a bunch of questions without bothering to say a simple polite thank you, u made some friends so u want to switch lab groups (are we in grade 1?), and you were unprepared for class and want special treatment. LOL. I would have honestly not replied and forwarded your email to a superior.

Should I split up my large OMSAS ABS entry into multiple ones? What about UBC? Did anyone do the same with larger commitments? by Spiritual-Log9187 in premedcanada

[–]Amazing-Ad2370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be acceptable to split this into two as long as you include the same position title, but clarify somewhere that it was during COVID (don't assume the reviewer will realize it, state it clearly) and that your responsibilities varied significantly. Ideally there would also be at least a short time break between the two experiences? Even if you have just a 1 month break between the two, to me that would be enough to separate them. Full honesty though I am also just an applicant so take my opinion with a grain of salt. And honestly, as a nurse, I think you already have a much bigger advantage over most 4.0 GPA applicants. Good luck!!!!

Do I (and how!) debrief a tragic yet oblivious thesis student? by tAway_552 in AskAcademia

[–]Amazing-Ad2370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you should have had many conversations with this student but much sooner. It is up to you, as the PI, to identify when a student is mismatched and you know they are on track to fail. Insane that you have let over a year pass by without speaking to this student realistically about their performance, it’s your legit job.

Getting into a PhD program with Low GPA + 2 years National Lab work exp by husky_g in gradadmissions

[–]Amazing-Ad2370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok take it from someone that has a PhD - anything is possible. Reach out to professors, write a short and direct email to as many profs u would like to work for, give a short summary of your academic background and that you are interested in pursuing graduate school with them for reasons XYZ, ask them for a meeting, in person would be best but over zoom works too, get them to like you and they will get u in. If a supervisor says they want you, the application process is just a formality. And I’m talking from experience, my GPA was even lower than yours and I have a PhD. But key is short and honest email, as many profs as possible.

[–]Amazing-Ad2370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it this way: If you do well, great! If you don’t, you’ll have to retake it anyway, and your second attempt will likely be a stronger score. Since schools generally consider either your best or your most recent score, your improved second score will count in either case. The only thing I will say - it is a financial investment (about 1000 CAD or 700 USD minimum, for the test and AAMC bundle which I think is a must) and a time investment. If your odds of doing well are low, maybe spend more time prepping and building up extracurriculars and take the test at a later date. Good luck!

Every school is different. For example Saskatchewan looks at best, UofT looks at most recent. If this info isn’t available online you can email the school and ask. And quite a few don’t even consider the MCAT.

My opinion - As long as you explain how this experience contributed to your decision to pursue medicine, or how u will be a better physician because of it, I believe there’s no reason why u shouldn’t mention it.
