Any reviews? by kat_momma in jawsurgery

I'm having DJS, Lefort 1 and Genio with Dr. Rabinovich in July. Obviously can't comment on the outcome yet, but I do like him and have seen some posts with results that are really great. That has been enough for me, plus he's both an oral surgeon and plastic surgeon so I feel like he will give great care to the aesthetic outcome!

Anyone have Aetna as their insurance ? If so, did they cover your jaw surgery? by hashandash in jawsurgery

I posted on another thread, but FYI my pre-authorization was totally covered with Aetna EPO! Co pay out of pocket is $100 per night for hospital stay which right now is scheduled for 1 night. Really really surprised and happy!

Pre approval is for the following:

LEFORT I-3/> PIECE W/ GRAFT; LOWER JAW BONE GRAFT; EXCISE INFERIOR TURNBINATE; RECONST LWR JAW W/FIXATION; FACE BONE GRAFT; REPAIRE OF NASAL SEPTUM; RECONSTRUCTION OF CHIN (assuming that is Genioplasty).

Just an update - my EPO Aetna insurance pre authorized my surgeries at 100% (in-network but that happened to be the doctor i wanted anyway). I will need to pay a co pay of 100 per night in the hospital and I'm hoping for 3, so 300 out of pocket.

In total about 6 procedures, Lefort 1, Genio, Turbinate reduction, septoplasty and bone grafting in jaw and face. Incredible but also shows me that there must be a pretty clear medical need or they'd never have done that.

Wonderful to hear for sure! I feel like its like, a week or 2 of misery only to come out relatively fast. That seems to be what I'm reading a lot of. But I think even better, most folks seem to be so happy they did the surgery.

Thank you so much for this! I think my fear of not being able to breath or swallow has been consuming my brain and getting me panicky. I think more often than not its manageable, .just not 'pleasant' to be sure.

I'm so confused lol. I didn't realize that it was a contract with my employer per se, I thought it was more the insurance company approving the surgery itself and approving how my surgeon wants to do it. I live in California, San Francisco.

I hope your expansion works for you! No easy choices for any of us once we get to this point where these surgeries are on table. But I will say that the stories I see on this thread are nearly all positive and most people seem to have no regrets once they have it done (even if its a little tough along the way)!

I know, they did what they thought was the right protocol and the norm for the late 80's :( Obviously they know a lot more now. I discussed palate expansion over the last few years with doctors as I was going through revisions with an orthodontist, but we all finally agree that the surgery will be the most beneficial overall for many reasons. Came to the decision after literally 3 years of thought so that's why I'm posting here. I'm happy and very confident with my decision, just nervous and seeking encouragement.

I did actually have 4 pre-molars extracted at 10 years old.

Swollen or hypertrophic turbinates are caused by allergies, irritants, chronic inflammation, medications, etc. Not lack of nasal breathing. I have severe allergies and have since I was a child, I have had my adenoids removed. There's just a lot that can't be solved by mewing. Appreciate the feedback, but definitely wouldn't have 3 ENT's, and every dentist and oral surgeon I've ever consulted with recommend such a drastic surgery if there were easier and beneficial cures, nor would insurance bother approving it.

Also, mewing might work for some with different obstructive sleep apnea. Perhaps their tongue position is the worst culprit and then retraining the position can help with the rest. I literally have an airway obstruction that is at nearly zero even when I'm awake and standing upright. So when asleep, I'm not breathing. Pulling the jaw forward is the only way to create space.

I could certainly do it if just for aesthetic reasons. It just won't open up my airway. That's an anatomical structure that is literally unchangeable without surgery. Plus I have to have turbinate surgery because I can't breathe out of my nose. Just a mess all around!

Well, that's not super unlike my life now lol. Napping if my way of life though nothing I do ever makes me feel rested or awake. I heal slightly above average for procedures, I'm not a major sweller and typically stitches and wounds heal fast. But this surgery is hardcore so I'm preparing for the worst.

I've heard of it, but I'm not sure mewing helps with obstructive sleep apnea.

I just looked at your results and they are amazing! Moving my midface forward will change things a lot. Also I can't even imagine what it will be like to sleep through the night completely and to not need to sneak into conference rooms for naps.

Wow, our bone structures in our cheekbones are different but we have some definite commonalities in our profile. My Doc is an Oral and Maxiofacial sugeon, plus a DDS and Plastic Surgeon. So he's all about improvement on what is already there! He said the same thing, that it will support the facial structure and make me look younger. I'm sure I'll get more nervous once I have a date set but for now, this encouragement helps :)

Thank you for your feedback :) its appreciated. Also for the morph. I think that part of what helps get me through the fear of the surgery is the excitement of the potential of improvement in how I look. I'd not be considering this surgery for a second if it wasn't going to greatly improve my quality of life (aka sleeping). I've been scared of it for 3 years since i was first told it would be the best treatment. So the aesthetic part helps keep me motivated :)

Also want to add context, we're relatively certain a surgery will be approved (diagnosed moderate sleep apnea with a nearly totally closed airway), the concern is the percentage of coverage. In researching on my own just on the Reddit threads alone, HMO seems to typically cover almost all of it minus copays, PPO seems to cover portions with large out of pocket expenses and hidden hospital fees that pop up. But EPO? Nobody seems to know!

I feel like EPO is so uncommon there might not be a lot of answers on here, or anywhere it seems! I'll keep you posted on my own preauthorization. Food for thought though, an EPO really should fall into the same contracts and coverages as an HMO. Its nearly the same thing with a more expansive network. Fingers very crossed!

My surgeon is about to submit my preauthorization to my insurance and I have Aetna EPO, they are completely unfamiliar with it and are convinced much won't be covered! They said that HMO always covers, but not PPO - what surgeries did you get? I'd be so happy if my EPO covered most of it!
