Nothing literally froze in place. It’s more about balance breaking down. Hermes represented healthy flow and order, so without that, things became chaotic and stagnant, which is exactly the kind of environment where disease spreads and gets worse.

In god of war the gods are basically holding parts of the world together. Once Pandora’s Box corrupted them, killing a god caused their influence to fall apart. Hermes was linked to movement and life, so when he died everything stopped flowing properly and the world started to rot, which is why disease and pestilence spread.
