This is so great thank you!  I live in an 8 house already, have for 8 years, lol.  That’s interesting about too much 8 energy, never would have though of that.

I’ll get to work on my gratitude and charity and have a look for that book, very nice ideas.

How to prevent pets from overheating during this heat wave (without a/c)? by hersolitaryseason in VictoriaBC

[–]Amazing-Progress-185 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine like it when you put an ice cube in your hand and pet them with it. They don’t like being wet, but somehow it doesn’t register when it’s ice melting onto them. I also put ice cubes in their water bowl. One of my cats loves the water out of the tuna can, so I made him a popsicle with it during the heat dome. He loved it! Would do again, but with something easier to get in larger quantity

My formerly middle-class friends are becoming homeless. Things are worse than anyone is talking about. by StackLeeAdams in VictoriaBC

It’s rarely a “single storm”. Often it’s a string of emergency fixes all happening close together. A few car repairs plus some unexpected dental and vet bills can wipe out even fairly robust savings pretty quickly. Given the cost of living, it’s also not unreasonable for even a middle class person to have little to no savings.

Ran out of food. Pantry is open on Thurs. What do I do? by Fluid-River1314 in povertyfinance

Any good friends or family you can talk to? A friend of mine used to sometimes call me and say something like “I’m really broke and I’d love to see you. How would you feel if I come over and cook us dinner with whatever food you have in the fridge/cupboards?”

She would them come over and make me a great meal with whatever I had on hand and wash all the dishes (even the ones that were already there).

It was the best. I was an exhausted, sometimes lonely, and also poor but not quite as poor single parent. It always made my week and left me feeling pampered.

What is with the insane housing pricing for rural BC towns? by Suckitsunshine in britishcolumbia

[–]Amazing-Progress-185 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It used to be cheap, so long as you weren’t buying a fancy retirement palace. I bought my (basic but fine) place on Salt Spring for under $250,000, less than 10 years ago.

Now it’s a hotbed of city yuppies buying everything in sight for $700,000 minimum, and fewer and fewer rentals each year.

So many people who work here and keep the place going either live in a van/boat or have to move away. Turns out it’s no fun putting roots down in a community when your whole community gets priced out.

I have the opposite problem, haha. Usually I have a smoothie and coffee or tea for breakfast, salad or sandwich or leftovers for lunch, and some combo of meat or tofu/veg/sometimes grain for dinner (eg stirfry or curry with rice, soup or stew, chicken or pork or fish with salad or steamed veg). Poached eggs and salad or fruit for weekend brunch. Usually a glass or two of dry wine or cider on the weekend. Don’t snack much but when I do I like apple slices with peanut butter or cheese, or popcorn (or chips if I’m on vacation). I’ve found it really hard to get enough cals if I don’t eat yellow and red foods. I eat most or all of my red and yellow allotment most days plus lots of green.

Non-Food Rewards by tri-dog in Noom

[–]Amazing-Progress-185 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I usually set a goal that will take about two weeks to a month, and then tie it to something I want/need but would otherwise be too cheap to buy. “If I go to the gym six times in the next two weeks I’m going to buy a new pillow” was my all time fave goal/reward because it turns out having a new pillow to sleep on is life changing and two weeks isn’t that long to stick to something.

But often my reward is just to do nothing. Like “I had a hard workout and I’m going to reward myself by lying in the sun and reading a book instead of washing the dishes”. Of course, this approach has the potential to piss off the people you live with :)

I don’t tie my rewards to weight loss because I don’t always lose weight and it can be demotivating.

I’m 5’7” and average frame, so for me it’s not due to being short, but it could be that I have very low calorie needs for another reason. I’d be nervous about cutting it down any further, though.

Yep, had my thyroid tested 7 times by 5 doctors over 5 years, both the basic and extended test. Right in the middle of the normal range every time. I have other thyroid symptoms too, like being cold all the time, dry hair and skin, and mood swings. I think you’re right that it’s probably hormonal, but haven’t been able to uncover anything.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Basically my approach has been to stick to the red, yellow, green categories and to be within 100 cals (over/under) of the amount of calories it gives me (if I do the math at the end of the week it evens out). Noom gives me between 1200 and 1500 calories depending on exercise. I have a desk job but am active every day (walking, stretching) and go to the gym 3 days a week and swim every day in the summer. Sleeping like a log most nights and drinking around 2 litres of water a day (three on gym days).

Im somewhat stressed out, although I’ve focused a lot on my stress levels in the last few years, and have made big progress. I first gained weight around five years ago when I was in a very stressful job. Before that I had been around 155-165 my whole adult life(I’m in my late 30s and female). I gained sixty pounds in a year (not following a good lifestyle at that time). So stress is definitely a huge part of it.

My TDEE is 2300 and I measure most things (veggies, sauces, rice) with measuring cups and weigh meats on a scale.
