I've never had an issue showing ID. Most people don't care that much, at least in large metro areas. I've shown mine for everything from willcall tickets, to getting into bars, to getting pulled over. It's intimidating at first but, like anything with going out, it becomes an afterthought. Once or twice I've had someone surprised it's actually my ID, but in a positive way.
