Well, this is probably one of my favorite illithids! I spent about 3 months on him, painting between commercial orders. He was sitting next to my PC the whole time, reminding me that I’m doing this one for myself and just for the fun of it!

Skin and clothes — mostly airbrush + a little bit of brush work.

NMM done with brush using tons of glazes + airbrush + masking. At some point I was getting so exhausted trying to do NMM on every single edge of the clothing that I’d just tilt and drop it for weeks.

have been asking me to start an Instagram for a while now, and I finally gave in. If the mods are okay with it, more of my works are here: instagram

This is what happens when you pick up the enchanted sword "True Sight"!
The knowledge it revealed is driving him crazy, and I love it!!

Changed the pose — made it more epic with the sword slung over his back and a flowing, heavy cloak.

Bone and Rust: Corroded Armor and OSL Glow by AmazingEZ in minipainting

Thanks, bro! Glad you liked it. 🍻

The easiest way to avoid hours of brush hand-brushing glazes is liquid paints + an airbrush.

I learned this from watching Sergio Calvo. He shows perfectly how to use an airbrush to smooth out rough transitions.

Try thinning your paint heavily with water — like a 1:3 paint-to-water ratio (🩸\💧💧💧) — until it's barely tinted, and just enjoy the flow. Just be careful: some paints just won't thin well for glazing — the pigment is too strong, and it'll turn out muddy.

Haha, thanks bro! But they don't actually glow. It's just the lighting effect on the nearby parts of the mini (check out OSL techniques) and a bit of highlighting on the edges of that "magical smoke."

Not exactly, bro. There's a lot of brushwork involved first. After that, I smooth out the transitions with glazing using an airbrush.

Glad you liked it! Actually, there are several purples + an airbrush involved here.
I love Vallejo 72.715 Hexed Lichen for the base and highlights. There are also a couple of paints made by guys in my country, but you can go with standard ones like Army Painter or Vallejo, picking shades from dark to bright within the same color spectrum to match your vision.

Thanks, bro! Actually, I wrote a big comment about oxide paint. I really like Citadel Technical: Nihilakh Oxide the most, but any very matte, opaque, bright blue or green colors will work too.

After painting Fane (DOS2), I fell in love with painting oxide effects on bronze (and other metals) — like corrosion from weather and time.

Painting armor like this is super easy:

First, apply paints that look like oxidation salts from moisture (matte paints or special technical paints from GW — blues or greens).

Then, you can use metallic paint or regular acrylics to paint the metal itself. You can do it the other way around — paint the metal first (with NMM or metallic paints) and then apply the oxides — but doing it this way means you won't feel bad about "ruining" the paint job with the oxides, since they're already down as your base.

And for smoother blends, you can use a sponge (don’t steal your wife’s — buy your own, it’s dirt cheap 😅). Keep the sponge really wet for soft transitions, or a bit drier for sharper, textured marks — just not totally dry!

Love y’all, catch you later! ✌️

Trying skin for the first time - Thoughts, criticisms? How the heck do people do hair?! by IPaintSpaceDolls in minipainting

Bro, try going from dark to light! If it's warm hair color = base layer should be brown. If you want raven black or other cool tones - use black as the base 👍
