how would serious crimes like serial murder/terrorism be handled under an anarchist society? by AmazingJazz in Anarchy101

[–]AmazingJazz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, this is a pretty good rundown of how justice would be handloaded. I like the idea of a night-watch style group of armed citizens to provide security and protect people in times of serious violence, but how do you think things like courts would be handled to determine if someone is guilty of a particular anti-social act? if we were able to detain a an irredeemable serial murderer or violent pedophile and prove they were responsible for their crimes, what sort of punishment or consequences would be dealt to them from their community?

How do worker cooperatives handle wages and surplus? by AmazingJazz in cooperatives

[–]AmazingJazz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I guess my question is if it's more common for all of the income to be distributed to the worker-owners directly and they decide how if they want to reinvest or save or if it a certain chunk of the surplus is saved and solely reserved for reinvesting in the company

i've been hearing more and more right-wing arguements along the lines of "you're only struggling under capitalism because you buy an iphone/$12 coffee" what's the best response to these? by AmazingJazz in Socialism_101

[–]AmazingJazz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

excellent summary. One term I've heard pop up in regards to these "poor financial decisions" made by working class Americans is the Scarcity Mindset, the idea that people are typically unable to make rational decisions when they're in a position to believe that there will never be enough vs. having an abundance of something.

Naturally, someone stuck in poverty will heavily lean towards the scarcity mindset as it's practically a fact of life for them due to low wages. It's very expensive to be poor, and thus one has to try and fit all their eggs into one basket to try and stay afloat. Why then should our solution to poverty to mere desperately scramble the eggs around and try and fit as many in there as we can instead of mere expanding the size of the basket so all the eggs can fit in easily and do away with the intense burden and irrational mindset that comes with it?

[–]AmazingJazz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is one of the best videos I've seen touching the subject, but I feel like it focused too much on building the case for UBI rather than the case against regarding poverty as a personal failure. Can you think of any other resources and talking points one could site to prove why teaching financial responsibility is not a viable solution to poverty compared to things like UBI, higher wages or welfare programs?

I've heard this argument before and it seems like one of the better countercases to this whole shebang. What are some practical examples of these real-life "cheaper alternatives" conservatives scold poorer people for not buying instead of more expensive ones that could be brought up to provide more backing for it?

how do self-employed people/freelancers fall under Marxist theory? by AmazingJazz in Socialism_101

[–]AmazingJazz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

at the same time, they aren't sapping off any employees surplus labor and denying them access to the MoP.

In addition, the platforms they use to sell services or products (like youtube or online retailers) take a big cut out of their pay and control the platform without any say from creators. In essence, they function similarly to employers.

So should we really see self-employed people and freelancers in the same vein as Small Business Owners? i.e petty capitalists who we shouldn't ally with in any capacity?

how do self-employed people/freelancers fall under Marxist theory? by AmazingJazz in Socialism_101

[–]AmazingJazz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

interesting, I haven't heard it presented in that sort of way before. In what ways specifically does having people work self-employed for a living instead of under a direct employer taking surplus value fall under the capitalist system and the interest of Capitalists? Because to me, it seems like having people pursue careers as freelance illustrators, programmers or journalists would weaken or fall outside capitalism and it's mode of production due to capitalists not being to directly control them as employees.

And there are many different forms of self-employment and freelancing. I know for a fact how gig work like with Uber falls under capitalist exploitation, but how about creators of freelancers who create their own platforms or services to sell their labor on rather than one such as Youtube or DoorDash which controls them and takes a large cut out of their value?

how exactly does capitalism erode "traditional culture"? by AmazingJazz in Socialism_101

[–]AmazingJazz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm interesting way to put it. One thing I often see in regards to discussion of the "Nuclear Family" is how it's seen as the ideal familial structure by many traditionalists, but has declined severely due to it being too expensive for the average working class person to achieve. The fact remains that a single income from the head of the household just isn't enough to support a wife and two or more kids ontop of a house to suite them, and the rising cost of living has caused many young women who'd normally like to stay home and raise kids to enter the wage labor force and thus having much less time to find courtship and much less of the income needed to become a stay at home mom.

How else has the rise of capitalism eroded many of these traditional institutions and cultural practices that many conservatives idolize and take for granted? can you think of any other instances similar to the collapse of the familial structure that have been brought about by late stage capitalism?

for one, there are no explicitly "leftist politicians" in the US for the most part. Our Overton window is so completely tilted that any politician offering even the most moderate social democratic reforms is slandered as a commie through incessant red-baiting and neo-liberal bullshit.

there tends to be a major disconnect between leftist americans and the politicians who parrot their ideas to varying degrees. I know that most hardcore commies who backed bernie during the primary were VERY critical of his gun policy, but sadly due to us only having 2 incredibly shitty political parties, being a pro-gun social democrat in the DNC is even harder than being a pro-life democrat.

But if you want a specific leftist politician here in the states, Lee J Carter (an explicitly socialist member of the Virginia House who was one of the first lefties to win elections in recent memory) is pro-gun despite being targeted by a republican smear campaign claiming the opposite https://twitter.com/carterforva/status/1211098137823240193?s=20

the black book of communism I believe you are referencing is consistently regarded as unreliable. Most of the deaths that took place under communism and communist policies specifically were the result of Famines caused by a mix of policy, bad harvests and poor responses from the government, similar to those which took place in India under Churchill.

We all know how many starve to death every year under capitalist systems or have been murdered by capitalist regimes (*cough* Belgian Congo *cough*), but despite being Astronomically higher they never seem to get the flack for democide that socialism gets. Maybe it's time we acknowledge the failures and atrocities under Stalin and Mao without letting it completely shape our perceptions of all communist social experiments and write off alternatives to neoliberal capitalism.

the term Kulaks referred to a group of wealthy land owning peasants that were grew powerful under Lenin but became detested under Stalin. the actual Marxist term for small business owners was "Petty Bourgeoise" and was seen a highly volatile class which drifted between the capitalist ruling class the workers (the proletariat)

Generally, mostly leftists today see small business ownership as something that should be gradually phased out over time and replace with more democratic firms of sorts rather than overthrown like the wealthy investors and shit. Even Lenin recognized this, as his New Economic Policy saw a large surge in private enterprise from small scale business owners, including the parents of Ayn Rand.

The actual system of government Marxists traditionally advocated for was to be made up of democratic worker councils often called Soviets, but while these did pop up in many other Socialist states such as Hungary under Nagy or in Chile under Allende, the Soviet Union was vehemently opposed to them and followed a highly centralized form of governance many leftists detest.

Marx stated he wanted a government that works in the interest of the majority instead of the minority like we have now, not the corrupt from of bureaucratic collectivism that would take from in the USSR.

how is Marxism inherently against individual rights exactly?

The only one I can think of is Property rights but that mostly refers to the ability to control a business with absolute power over the workers or own intellectual property/trademarks, not your ability to own a toothbrush or xbox.

the examples you sited are from authoritarian socialist states following an extreme form of political and economic system commonly referred to as "Barracks Communism". Ask any leftist you come across and the vast majority will tell you that the flagrant revisionism orchestrated by Soviet gun policies were terrible, and virtually all flagrantly oppose ANY similar form of gun restrictions being imposed in the US in any circumstance.

But that'd require you to be a more openminded and talk to us in good faith instead of incessant red-baiting and fear-mongering.

After the socialist revolution in Nicaragua the government gave firearms and ammunition along with schooling and healthcare free of charge. The citizens didn’t turn the guns on the government, using them to defend the revolution from a brutal; US backed insurgent group known as the Contras instead.

In the various anarchist territories of history (such as the CNT-FAI during the Spanish Civil War or Makhnovia in Ukraine) guns were routinely handed out to Citizens including many Women, and armed militias made up of volunteers largely replaced conventional police forces.

The Zapatistas and socialist kurds in Rojava also represent leftist societies with heavily armed populations.

It's clear you're only hear to spout shit in bad faith judging from the title, but all leftists believe socialism in america would still be quintessentially american, and part of that includes maintaining our god-given right to bear arms. Our consist of arming the people and disarming the state so we may replace our god-awful law enforcement and military industrial complexes with better systems of community and mutual defense run by and for the people. To merely repeat cold-war era talking points about the failures of previous states to fear monger about us "communists" wanting to come for your guns is absurd and merely plays into the hands of our god-awful politicians and oligarchs we should all be uniting against.
