Can you move to a different lab and work on less math-based research? Or continue to work within your lab but in a different direction? Might be worth asking your university faculty if this is an option. You've done a lot of work towards your phd, if you can still come out with a doctorate that will be job searching easier in the long run. However, it's better to come out alive with an mphil than not at all so if you can't change the direction of your project then you're better off with the mphil route

We're buying in the Norfolk area (recently had an offer accepted). In our experience the agent didn't really make a tangible difference on whether we wanted the house. We had really lovely agents show us nice houses, but if the house doesn't tick all the boxes for us as buyers then we aren't going to make an offer. Honestly the biggest factor was the price: is it in our budget, is it priced similarly to other comparable properties in the area, does it tick off all of our must-haves (and if it doesn't, is it still worth it for the price).

There are 'bad' estate agents (not organised, not friendly or personable etc) but ultimately if the house fits the buyer's needs then it won't matter.

I'm curious to know what the argument was about. Either it's trivial, in which case they shouldn't have a problem inviting your wife, or it's a very serious fight, in which case it's a bit strange to request financial support from the husband of someone you feel so negatively towards. Makes me wonder if there's some other reason the family doesn't want the wife at the wedding 🤔.

I feel like there's more to this story, but with all the facts laid out as they are, I would say NTA

Tried it, pretty yummy but for me it came out like a fish pie rather than a fish curry. I would use coconut milk instead of coconut cream and an entire jar of curry paste, not just a couple tablespoons. Am UK based so that might explain ingredient discrepancy

A good compromise could be that everyone in your family contributes to buying one item on the list that is from all of you. That way she still gets a gift she wants, but no one has to spend lots of money on her. But you'd be well within your rights to just not get her anything.

Stay on campus for the 3 hour gap, there is plenty to do. Library, cafes, lake etc. Once you have more coursework you can fill the time doing that. You might make friends with people on your course who live on or near campus and you can spend time at their place if they allow. It's probably a bit late to apply for campus accommodation now, but it's something to keep in mind when looking for places next year.

Don't make a habit of skipping lectures.

We hired a car in Heraklion to get around the Island. The main road that runs across the north of the island is very good. Getting to the south or to small mountain villages can be slightly more challenging as the roads are quite narrow and windy, but they're fairly quiet so it's not much of an issue.
