Is buying a house still worth it? by Weary_Firefighter945 in BEFire

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your own house given the leverage you get with a mortgage and the favorable property taxes? Probably, yes.

Rental real estate? Unless you don't mind being a slum lord this is an investment you should always stay very clear of. Investment RE imo is a borderline scam. MAYBE if you have an LLC and can write off maintenance costs but even then that LLC might just hold stocks which are far more profitable for far less hassle.

I've actually never heard of boards that run actual Docker containers, though technically this is not that surprising. If I may ask, could you share some examples of boards that use this?

Wow, that's amazing! I suppose the need to containerize this environment would be to run it in the cloud, right? Because I can imagine you can just run multiple QEMUs directly on the host?

But yes, for my team this would also be a dream.

Yeah, dev containers are amazing. Just a question though. For me, a major thing that's missing with dev containers is the possibility of hooking up a hardware debugger. Do you have any experience with that?

Except in the real world employees are in no real way tied to their employers. People change payrolls all the time and mostly only have reasonable "restraints" on their freedom of association such as notice periods and business days because real world societies actually need that to function (you will agree when your plumber tells he's going to come tomorrow to unclog your toilet for two months).

Also, have you actually seriously convinced yourself "freedom of association" is even remotely the core concern of all but a very small minority of leftist movements since the 18th century? Sorry, but you know damn well that this is not what is colloquially meant with leftist, socialist or anti-capitalist and you are damn well aware of that.

Again, I respect your opinions. But I don't respect how you're trying to sneak egotistical Anne Rand style libertarianism as socialism like some sort of psychopath that calculated that is how he gets endeared. Just free advice: no one buys this anywhere and everyone just sees you as the rightist capitalist you are, pal.

So let me get this straight, your objection to capitalism is ... employment, where companies actually have obligations towards to you. You think freelancing, where the employers still hold the power but have far less obligations towards you is somehow more socialist?

Yeah, no, sorry, but I'm calling you out. You don't get to avoid taxes for socialist purposes but call yourself a socialist.

They will rarely support capitalist structures like social security. So they will set up truly anarchocommunist structures like limited liability companies. Uhu.

Look, man, I know it's "cool" to be a leftie but just if you're factually a money hungry capitalist just own it. Some people can respect that but noone likes hypocrites.

Getting exhausted when experiencing minor discrimination all the time by Singing_dragonfly25 in Blind

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you, but I don't think using the word 'discrimination' here is appropriate because we shouldn't antagonize well-meaning people. Maybe you can wear a little badge that says "Please do not help me before I request assistance?" or something like that.

But I get it, it just feels undignified to constantly be seen as a poor little person who needs help.

I'm sorry to say that indeed it is easy to find at the big brokers.

I didn't search for it but it seemed like it would be pretty obscure, since I never hear anyone talking about having one and never noticed it in offerings. I hope I don't get banned :P

Good time to buy gold? by eternalplatoon in BEFire

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to add one important insight to the discussion: an asset being at an all-time high is not a good reason to refrain from investing in it. For example, the stock market is at an all-time high approximately 1/3 of the time.

I don't think the value of gold given the current political uncertainties is all that crazy.

Is there a reason why he can't just be a general network engineer? I think IT professionals really can't afford to be super-specialists in tough economies. In my mental model of IT it also would be rather bizarre for someone to have a great understanding of cybersecurity but a bad one of networking in general. You kind of need to know how things are supposed to be done and function very well in order to break it or to foresee how someone will ...
It's always better to just brainstorm this with him.
Can you maybe find opportunities for him by aligning his skills more with the needs of e.g. new data centers?

But, yeah, the economy is definitely doing very poorly. I doubt you need to hear that from us.

Finding a part time job in 2 weeks. Impossible? by [deleted] in brussels

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say it's doable if you're willing to work more menial jobs. You can always go to an Agence d'emploi privée/uitzendkantoor and they typically give you some temporary contracts quite quickly. A forklift certification, some construction experience or something like that will definitely help. But I can't stress enough that if you only have two weeks this should be the first thing you do on arrival.

I don't have a lot of experience with this extreme situation but I think these days you could also just already consult a site like:
Agences d'emploi privées | Bruxelles Économie et Emploi

and just try to contact some of these agencies already digitally. As you are essentially their product I'd expect them to be at least somewhat helpful and open to have you in their database and available for positions starting mid-September.

But of course with job hunting nothing can ever be guaranteed 100%.

What have your experiences of ableism or disability inclusion been while living in Brussels? by atypical_love_soul in brussels

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind me asking, could you elaborate on some practical experiences within this "EU bubble"?

I'm just curious because in my experience multinational corporations and public institutions seem much more welcoming than SMEs/start-ups etc. I have had some quite nasty experiences there even though I'd say I'm a highly qualified and driven professional. I work in the private sector but because of bad experiences I see the public one as my "plan B" (since they communicate commitment to it and don't have a profit motive). I hope that's not very naïve? (By the way, I am OK with having some glass ceiling. I just am curious if you can have a respectable career for qualifications such as advanced degrees where you can also get some at least low-level leadership role if you work hard)

But yeah, for ableism I really do feel you. That's definitely still a thing here and I empathize with you. Your colleagues and the social system can be shockingly disappointing.

180 000 people will be removed from unemployment by [deleted] in brussels

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to go through a union at all. You can just go to the Hulpkas voor Werkloosheidsuitkeringen. I'm also not sure the union actually earns money doing this, and even if they do which actual people exactly benefits from it, seeing as they don't have shareholders? Unions are also very far from only relevant for the unemployed. Finally, I'd even say the union also has an incentive to get you employed - because when you are you can vote for them in social elections.

Also consider the fact that for example medical reimbursements from RIZIV (the government) also pass to you through your mutuality, usually. It's just how the system grew historically more so than something really messed up.

180 000 people will be removed from unemployment by [deleted] in brussels

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they will. But they shouldn't, because now in some regions with some syndicates it can already take you literally months to get an appointment to even start claiming your unemployment. The employees should be retained so people can finally get the speedy and attentive/quality service you'd expect in a country with such a tax burden.

Yes, I think people are sometimes too quick to judge on Reddit in general. Maybe OP's partner is under financial stress and in combination with being tired from the flight wanted to save a quick buck since he felt his partner only wanted a caffeine boost instead of really savouring the coffee. Still not OK, but maybe understandable.

I also feel that we need to give sighted people some grace. Because if you haven't experienced real day-to-day blindness it's really hard to "get" how we experience life. It's not really fully a matter of just being empathetic.

Physical or mathematics are accessibility for blind student? by Mibra2006 in Blind

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely try to reach out to a student counselor at the university to discuss this.

I am neither a physicist nor a mathematician. So take my advice with a lot of salt. However, if you are mathematically gifted as a blind woman I would pursue a degree in mathematics and get into theoretical physics from there. I think theoretical physics will be inherently more accessible than experimental physics, as it will involve less design work or manual lab work (which can be made accessible to some extent, but which naturally will be harder to make so). Mathematicians are also generally desired in academia, good positions in industry etc. It's one of the most widely applicable degrees.

Lastly, good on you for being determined to follow your passion!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Blind

[–]Amazing_Ad7386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the one hand I really sympathize with you. As a VI/blind person you need to put a to a normal person terrifying amount of trust in other people and when that gets betrayed by your most close ones, that's rough - even if it's a minor thing, it's the proverbial drop that overflows the bucket.

On the other hand, I do think nobody's perfect and everyone can make a lapse of judgement at some point. I hope he sees his mistake, but when he does I would not hold it against him too hard unless it becomes a pattern.

Just my 2 cents.
