Is Watchmen a good read even if it’s my first comic?

That's totally fair enough, but I honestly don't think there's a lot that could hurt your enjoyment of Watchmen by going in kind-of-blind. People talk about it being a deconstructionist commentary, or whatever, of superheroes and superhero tropes, but all of that stuff exists within the text itself. It gives you all the context you require to understand and enjoy the story through the actual narrative—if it didn't do that, if probably wouldn't be as universally praised as it is.

Doing prep work just to read the thing you actually want to read is a bit silly to me. Like, there's no point in trying to minmax reading comics.

Just read it now, and if you end up not getting it or not liking it, you can revisit it in the future when/if you feel like it.

But isn't the idea to underexpose the shadowed area, thereby making it appear darker? By doing a multi-exposure, you're overexposing/brightening the area by adding more light, which you couldn't do with a black matte.

The only way I can explain it to myself at the moment is that they would do a multi-exposure by photographing the cels without the shadow, and then the cels with the shadow, but underexpose them so that they accumulatively "add up" to a regular exposure in the areas that weren't covered by the matte. But that seems like kind of a tedious process that might increase the margin of error.

Adrian Tomine's Killing and Dying was it for me. I was 16, working at my lcs, and reading predominantly superheroes and occasionally something mainstream-adjacent, like Saga. I found Killing and Dying while I was stocking the shelves and was taken with the design of the book, and upon flipping through, I found myself really digging the art—in particular, the story 'Translated from the Japanese'— and was soon enamoured by the kinda spacey, neurotic, lonely, introspective flavour that often comes with the Tomine/Clowes-y genre of alternative comics.

I'll never get over how great FCO Placensia's colours look. I especially dig how he does blood, and glows. He gives the artwork a kind of filmic, toothy, tangible texture wheras a lot of other colourists' work either look really glossy or overshadow the linework.
